Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    another suggestion for future a5.X

    hi:

i've been having great success in using action scripting creating my new app (thank you all for your help!).

it would be nice to insert a line or two of straight comments into the lines of action scripting. i know there is a comment field as a descriptor for the action however between lines of action script would be great to place comments such as:

'the temporary table now contains the current inventory levels
'the items table has the inventory draw requirements
'and now we're ready to check for inventory shortages

    just another thought

    regards,

    ed

This can be done by selecting Inline Xbasic and inserting some text but remember to put the ' in front of the text. When you view the script your memo text will be there.

        hi keith:

as per usual it's not the limitation of a5v5, but just my lack of experience in using it.

        thanks for your reply!!

          hi keith:

i tried inserting an inline xbasic action with

          'this is a test

as the only line of code.

the icon for inline shows up along with the text "Inline Xbasic". what i want to do is see the comment "this is a test" as one of the readable lines in the action scipt. i'm quite possibly missing the obvious. any help appreciated (as usual)

          thanks

            Ed,

A line prefaced with the ' mark is not a loine of code as follows:

            'this is a test

This is a line of code.

            browse1.refresh()

            if you have:

browse1.refresh() followed by 'this refreshes the browse (on the same line) Everything before the ' mark is code. Everything after the ' mark distinguishes the code from viewable text which explains what the code.

              hi ken:

unfortunately i must not have communicated properly. i know it looked a little odd, just attempting a test to accomplish an in line comment structure.

i have forced myself to write a small app exclusively in action scripting to become familiar with it. one of the scripts is about 20 lines long. what i hope to do is to place lines of comments imbedded into the action script itself to clairify the script at a glance. the comments for each ilne only show up when the line has focus.

              thanks for your reply!

              regards,

                two choices:

                1. convert to inline xbasic, edit and add comments

                2. convert to xbasic, edit and add comments

                  thanks for your reply!

i sort of figured that was the limitation. perhaps i'm just fixated on action scripting at this moment, however it would be handy to embed the comments. the generic "run saved operation" etc even with line specific comments is not intuitive at first glance.

                  thanks again for your reply.

Do you mean something like this? This is a picture of another system's scripting method. There are pros and cons to how it works. Also has a tree structure for expanding certain sections.

Just thought it might make a picture of what you are trying to describe.

The software is designed to intercept plain text printouts (usually from a unix box) and reformat into graphic output. (Just like an Alpha 5's report).

It costs a lot more than Alpha 5 - development and/or runtime.

No comments from the peanut gallery about the lack of comments inspite their availability. (It's still a work in progress) :-)

                        Ed,

Since action scripting is merely a wrapper around xbasic, I suppose Alpha would have to modify every genie to allow a commment line. It probably would have been easy enough to do at the time had they thought about it, but now they would have to go back and recode hundreds of genies! Then again, these guys are wicked clever so you never know what they'll come up with!
