Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Genie Code Won't Work

    I have this code on a button to open a from as modal for thepurpose of entering a new record. The new.record() part does not work (it's as if the code wasn't there) and when closing the form, I get this error message: The object':newclass' does not exist.

    All the code was generated by the genie. The 'calling' form is based on the set and the called form is based on the parent table.

    Anyone have a clue as to why:

    1. The new.record() does not work and,
    2. Why the error message?

    Thanks,

    kenn

    'Open the form centered on the screen

    dim f as p
    f=form.load("newclass","dialog")
    f.window_position("center","center")
    f.show()
    f.close()

    'Enter new record in Form 'newclass'.

    DIM object_name as C
    object_name = ":"+"newclass"
    DIM varP_Object as p

    'Get a pointer to the specified object

    varP_Object = obj(object_name)
    'Check if the specified object exists
    if .not. is_object(varP_Object) then
    ui_msg_box("Error","The object '"+object_name+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
    else
    varP_Object.new_record()
    end if

    Ken, I don't see anything in your script that begins a new record. Am I missing something? -- tom

        Ken, if, as you say, your called form is opening modal, don't you have to enable changes before you can begin the new record ? -- tom

          Tom,

          OK, I added the code to enable the change. Still won't open ready for new.record(). Get the same error message (twice) once, for the enable changes and once for the new record. Clearly, it's not finding the object.

          Actually, it's not opening as modal as per the code below, is it?

          Thanks,

          kenn

          dim f as p
          f=form.load("newclass","dialog")
          f.window_position("center","center")
          f.show()
          f.close()

          'Change record in Form 'newclass' .
          DIM object_name as C
          object_name = ":"+"newclass"

          ui_msg_box("Error","The object '"+object_name+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
          else
          varP_Object.allow_change(.t.)
          end if

          'Enter new record in Form 'newclass' .

            I swtiched the new record part of the code to the OnInit event of the form so that code is: topparent.new_record(). Only code left on the button is to open and center the form. Press the button and the attached jpg pops up. It is referencing a field on the called form which is defined as a simple lookup in the field rules.

            Close out the white window and the form opens in new.record() mode just fine.

            So what's causing this little creature to show it's face?

            Thanks,

              Ken,

              I'm still very new to this Action Scripting stuff, but here's an example I've cooked up for you.

              Begin with Form1. The only button on the form opens a second form as a dialog, and begins a new child table record there, using the key field value from the primary table. when the second form is saved and closed, the browse on Form1 is refreshed. Hope this helps.

              Unzip this to a separate folder. Do not mix with your development work.

                Tom,

                I cooed the file a bit longer. Your test is based on opening a form based on the child table rather than the parent table. Instructions are on the form. I was able to duplicate everything except the large white window. It simple flashes.

                Anyhow,

                whatcha think?

                  Tom,

                  Good job as always. I'm always learning from you and this just solved one problem. One note though. In order to refresh the browse in the parent properly, the Refresh line needs to be moved ahead of the Inbasic line.

                  (At least for mine to work that is.)
