Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookups

I'm having a brain freeze and Im trying go figure out how to get a value in a lookup. The table Im trying to get a value is "codes." In a serial number for a particular manufacturer the second alpha character is the year of manufacture. So if the Serial number is FM4643938 then the year is 2002. I thought if I had a table with the manufacturer name, letter, and year number then I could look at the Serial number and determine the year from that table. So lets say Whirlpool is that manufacturere and the letter is M and the year is 2002 in my codes table. I do have the formula of substr(serial,2,1) to look up matching information for my codes table. How can I make this happen? I losing my hair and I cant afford that!

    David - I'm confused?

Goal: "get a value in a lookup".

You say: The table Im trying to get a value is "codes." You want to get a value FROM this table or place a value in this table? What other fields are in this table?

"I thought if I had a table with the manufacturer name, letter, and year number" What is the name of this table?

Do you want to filter a lookup on a related table or do you want to fill fields with the lookup values?

I need more order to offer more help.

      Tom,

I'm wondering if he wants to 'search' the lookup table for a code rather than view a list of codes and make a selection??

        RE: Lookups

Ok. let me explain the best way I can
The table I am in is "appliance". The fields involved in the appliance table are "serial number" and "year". When I enter the serial number I want the year field to update with the particular year.

The table it will be looking at is "codes".
In this table are fields called "vendor", "letter",
and "year". So as follows is an example:

        Whirlpool M 2000

I willl be in the "appliance" table, entering a serial number and then I want the year field to update with the appropriate year when it looks in the "codes" table.

I hope I made this clear.

        Again, thanks for the help!

I think you have got everyone confused, why do you need a table for the codes? Are you trying to create a method to identify the year based on a letter in the appliance code? We would like to help but your objective is not clear.

It sounds like you want the lookup to be automatic. This would require that the year field be calculated and probably part of field rules. Attached is a simple database showing how this can be done with the codes in one table and the serials in another.

A complicating factor would occur if different manufacturer put the year code is a different position in the serial. This would require an intermediate calculated field for the code, based on the manufacturer.
