Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Are you using the ODBC Import Genie or attaching to the table directly from A5?

I get the same error message when trying to link to a MS SQL table. Looks like a bug in the ODBC sql driver to me.

            James,

            >>Why is the DBO there ?? I am the owner of the database
NO - YOU ARE NOT! If you were the owner, then the table name would be james.TableName

You need to start using Books online if you going to play with SQL (SQL Help):

The dbo is a user that has implied permissions to perform all activities in the database. Any member of the sysadmin fixed server role who uses a database is mapped to the special user inside each database called dbo. Also, any object created by any member of the sysadmin fixed server role belongs to dbo automatically.

For example, if user Andrew is a member of the sysadmin fixed server role and creates a table T1, T1 belongs to dbo and is qualified as dbo.T1, not as Andrew.T1. Conversely, if Andrew is not a member of the sysadmin fixed server role but is a member only of the db_owner fixed database role and creates a table T1, T1 belongs to Andrew and is qualified as Andrew.T1. The table belongs to Andrew because he did not qualify the table as dbo.T1.

The dbo user cannot be deleted and is always present in every database.

Only objects created by members of the sysadmin fixed server role (or by the dbo user) belong to dbo. Objects created by any other user who is not also a member of the sysadmin fixed server role (including members of the db_owner fixed database role):

I am a member of the Sysadmin role, why in MSQuery and Word Merging it does not use the dbo.

So how do we solve our problem, I have used SQL Server 7 for 3 years now on this is the first time that I have had this kind of problem. Access works seemlessly with SQL Server why cannot Alpha.

I really want to start using Alpha for my future development of databases and this is causing me much hassle. Do you know how we get around this...

I am logged onto my network as Admin which is part of the sysadmin group on the server with SQL Server 7.0 on.

Yes - it does, you just don't see it!

The people at Alpha need to address this one!

There is no getting around this at this time, when version 6 comes out with ADO, maybe, it might work for you.

                >>I am logged onto my network as Admin which is part of >>the sysadmin group on the server with SQL Server 7.0 on.

That's fine. There are tools that will need to use the "dbo." and then there are tools that will automatically
use the "dbo" but you will not see it!

Cheers lets hope they issue a patch for it, should be simple I would have thought as other packages have this sorted.

Thank you for your comments, lets get Alpha rocking and rolling so it over takes Access...

What about OLAP and Cubes does Alpha do these as in Access2002 and Older 97.

                    James,
We may be out of luck here. My son and I have been working on a major project which was relying on SQL. The contract was for a system for 80 plus users for a client. We had problems just as you describe - here is the reply we received by email from Aaron Brown:

"Unfortunately, I cannot help you too much. Our ODBC support has been known to fail in a variety of environments. About all I can tell you is that we are rewriting all our back-end database support to use ADO and/or native drivers so this problem will not occur in future releases. There are currently no plans to patch our existing ODBC support."

We assume our contract is sunk - guess you may be too. Any thoughts?

                    Richard

I'm not currently using A5v5 with SQL Server but I successfully connected and edited data in the dbo.Authors table (Pubs sample SQL database). My server is running SQL Server 2000. Keep in mind you can only do edits on forms and not in browses including embedded browses.

This might help. Attached is a zip file which shows how I set up my DSN to the SQL Server Pubs database. Unzip and look at the JPG files (they are named in number order). Hope this helps.

I wonder if the ODBC is too old version as attached
