Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Restore Backup Problem

    Hello,
Why - when I backup a database without the data files (only ddd, ddm, etc) files onto a floppy and

Then when I "do not have a database open" but have Alpha5 running, I restore that backup to the correct sub directory, the program tells me it backed up correctly but

All the tables are "dropped". Only the "SETS" remain. I have to manually reconnect (add in) all the tables.

Seems to happen only from A drive floppy.

    RE: Restore Backup Problem

Yes, thank you thank you thank you.

My backup restore doesn't work right either. I've tried on 4 different computers, two different databases and IT DOES NOT WORK!!!

I can back up all day long with third party software, but Alpha 5 doesn't work!

I select all files except for the data files. I back up to a floppy in drive a:. I then do a restore to the same database in another folder. When I run that database, either a form is corrupted, or the form isn't updated or actions on the form aren't updated.

I've tried doing a backup on one computer, all files except for the data files backed up on floppy, and do a restore on another computer. I end up with forms that don't run properly or corrupted forms.

      RE: Restore Backup Problem

I reserve the right to be wrong.....

      Couple questions first:
You backup the .cdx .ftp .ddd .ddm .ddx .sex .set .sem files to a floppy?

Then you restore those files to another directory where there are no tables .dbf??

or are you aying that then you copy the files back to the directory where you backup from?

First of all make sure that the backup files are not greater than the capacity of the floppy.count the number of files backup on the floppy against the ones that you intended to backup.

Now what makes me wonder is that you say that you copy them back to their original directory and that you have to "add" the tables yourself. Are you sure that the restore procedure is not deleting everything on the restore directory??

Can you please give us a better example.

        RE: Restore Backup Problem

All of the files are in the folder.

I make changes to the forms and/or scripts. I then want to update my friends database without overwriting his data. Therefore, I do a backup minus the data files. When I do a restore, a message comes up saying the restore has been completed.

When I open the database, some changes are there, but others are not. I've even ended up with forms so corrupted, I could not even open them up in the design mode. I ended up having to empty my tables, and append the tables using his data.

In my mind, this is what the backup and restore features are suppose to do.

          RE: Restore Backup Problem

          Hi Ron
I am not sure which engine Alpha uses for it's "zip" files. Maybe WinZip, maybe PKware's PKzip. I have not had the problems you are having. Never. I have used it a lot and the only problem I encounter is that, when restoring from a floppy, the tables are restored but dropped from the database so I have to re-attach them.

I am no expert but, it almost sounds like a Windows problem in zipping the files instead of an Alpha problem??

          Have you tried WinZip?

            Jim,

I have experienced the same problem you describe as well as the one's I've described. I use winzip, pkzip and norton backup. All work perfectly except for Alpha 5 backup.

I am eating CROW this morning instead of Turkey. I just had a problem with a repairs.dbf backup with the fields being in each other's position. The zip code was in address and the address was in state, etc. Now, I gotta find a backup that isn't corrupted so I can rebuild the data.

                    RE: Restore Backup Problem

the File transfer feature of LapLink copies only the files that have changed and, so far, I haven't had a problem with that but, be careful if you access the backed up data, you may get a newer date on it than the master data and LapLink won't know it's really older.

                      RE: Restore Backup Problem

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to look at GRPAKPRO. BTW, the correct website is www.grsoftware.com. Cost looks like it's $59.

Can anyone give me a description of the A5 file extensions? For this to work for me, I need to know which files are related to the program and which are related to the databases.

Another point/question. Because of the way A5 is constructed, it seesm as if the database files and the application files are inter-related. In other programs I have used in the past, the databases did not even have to be present for the program to work. If they were not there though, you couldn't access the information. But because of this problem, if I want to send a user an update to the program, do I need to include blank databases and then append his data later?

                      Thanks.

                        Hi Charlie:

I use Backup My PC (formerly Veritas Backup Exec). It is now distributed / supported by Stomp, Inc.

It's very easy to use, and it is simple to schedule backups (full, copy, incremental and differential).

It will backup to tape, CDR, CDRW, DVD, ZIP, JAZ, LS120, MO, hard drives, and network drives; however, it will not backup to floppy drive.

                        Saved me more than once.

                        See: http://www.stompinc.com/bump/bump_details.phtml?stp

A 30 day trial is available.
