Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dr. Wayne - Klez fix?

This klez virus is a real pain!

    Dr. Wayne,
I recieved an email with your name as the sender. It contains a file called 'value.bat' and states that it will remove klez and explains how it works by fooling the virus. It also stated that if there were any questions to email you and there was an email link right on the page. I was afraid of sending a virus to your account to ask you to verify this email so I figured the board would be a safe bet. Did you send this email to me? I have not and will not run the 'value.bat' file until you have confirmed it.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

RE: Dr. Wayne - Klez fix?

    Jeff,

I got an email from a strange account saying the tools included were a fix for Clez.....Delete it. It is the virus.

Antivir caught it and let me delete the attachment and email.

The only fixes for this stuff should be gotten directly from an antivirus software company's website or via using their anitvirus software.

            To ALL,

I have placed the REAL Klez removal tool on an earlier thread.

            http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?num=11&id=3029&loc=0&offset=120&sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&thread=3029

and the url to download it from the source if you don't trust my file.

This virus is running rampid because alot of people don't update their virus software. Even if you get the updated virus definitions you still need to update the actual software using live update (for norton).

              Jeff,
That *is* the virus you received. That's one of the tricks the virus uses--it sends a message claiming to have a virus fix.
To the best of my knowledge, my computer is not infected and is not the source of the virus. Someone who has my email address in their Outlook or Eudora program is the source of the infection. Who knows--maybe it's Selwyn!

                Dr Wayne

Is it the case that most of these viruses exploit the popularity of Outlook, Netscape etc and use their common usage as a means of spreading themselves on to other people? If this is the case would using alpha 5s email client reduce this problem or are they totally ruthless and know how to use any databases name and address table to replicate forwards

Check out this link from Symantec (Norton) which covers the Klez virus well. Particularly check out the section on email spoofing. Unfortunately, this makes finding who is infected rather difficult.

                  http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Get a good virus software, keep it up to date and scan often. And read the virus software companies advisories and suggestions. Their existence depends on being on top of all virus problems.

It's like the Three Stooges Pest Exterminators episode. If you don't have any pests, you don't get any business.
