Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help Please to Copy Previuos Records

    Hi All

    Here is my script

    t = table.get("mesurements")
    t.fetch_prev()
    fabric_description.text = t.fabric_description
    fab_code.text = t.fab_code
    Fabric_width.text=t.Fabric_width
    Pat_rep.text=t.Pat_rep

    The idea is to go back one record, get the values and use them in the current record. At the momemnt only the fabric_description field gets the data. If I change the order and put fab_code first then only that field gets the data.

    What am I doing wrong? I want the data from all the fields in the new record.

    All help greatfully received.

    Keith,

    Have you tried the Action Genie? There is an action script for copying a previous filed and a previous record. This should do what you want.

      RE: Help Please to Copy Previuos Records

      Keith,
      I'm afraid you are programming a recipe for doing nothing.
      t = table.get("mesurements")
      t.fetch_prev()
      fabric_description.text = t.fabric_description
      fab_code.text = t.fab_code
      Fabric_width.text=t.Fabric_width
      Pat_rep.text=t.Pat_rep

      What you are doing is this:
      1) Your form has fields from "mesurements"
      2) Using the same table pointer as the one the form has, you are moving it back to a previous record. If after t.fetch_prev() you were to do a parentform.resynch(), you would see, in fact, that the form is really "on" the previous record.
      3) You are then changing the field objects shown on the form to contain the values in the underlying table.
      If you want to program it in Xbasic, you would need to open a second table pointer to mesurements, move it to the previous record in whatever order you define as the previous order, save the field values, start a new record on the form, then fill out the field objects on the form.
      Also--if t.fabric_width is numeric, your code wouldn't work, in any event.

        Off topic but I know you are not in the habit of opening email from someone you don't know. I received an email from you this morning and think it may be connected to ythat nasty virus. I will send you an email latter today to discuss.

          Hi Peter

          The table Mesurements is a child table in a set.

          If you want to program it in Xbasic, you would need to open a second table pointer to mesurements, move it to the previous record in whatever order you define as the previous order, save the field values, start a new record on the form, then fill out the field objects on the form.

          Yes to all of this, but hows it done?

          I have been trying to do this with action scripting and have not got very far. Also the fields I am trying to fill are part of a record that has already been started.

          It goes like this record 1, Position= Front, Fabric=Blue; Record 2, Position= Back, Fabric=Blue Etc.

            Ken

            Thank you for the idea, I have tried very hard to use the Genie to get previous values. It simply will not allow me pick which fields I want to copy. I have attched Zip of app. I seem to be able to copy one field but not the whole bunch.

              Keith

              I notice that the fields you want copied are all part of a lookup in field rules. I'm not sure but this may be why it does not copy everything. Maybe someone with more experience can comment.

              Also I was wondering if you are trying to do a copy of the last record could you set the field rules for each of these fields as previous default and then just accept the value.

              I'll keep playing with it see if I can come up with a solution.

                Hi Keith

                I tried many different approches to your problem and have come up with one that works.

                I have attached your files with the changes made.

                What I did was created a button with two scripts attached to it. You first bring up the record that you want to copy then press the enter button which first copies the fields you want to copy into variables. and then enters a new record. The second script copies the variables into the fields of the new record. You must then save the entry.

                Play with it see if this helps. If I find anything else that will work better I'll let you know.

                  Keith,
                  There's an article on duplicating a record at www.learn alpha.com.

                      Hi Rick

                      Thanks for your file. It works just as you explained and sure does copy into a new record. However, I feel that it would confuse a user having entered a Position, selected a fabric and then press repeat fabric which then takes them back to position. Is it possible to enter a new position first then repeat the fabric?

                        Would the user be trying to copy the last viewed record or the last physical record in the database.

                          It would have to be the last viewed.
