Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form disappears when saved?

    This borders on the bizarre!

Last week, I added some data fields to a card stack in my A5V5 application. I started getting error messages that Field2 is missing. I tried creating a new Field2 and the machine froze. Then the thing worked; I just got the error message. Since we need those new fields to conduct business, I went ahead with network optimization and warned the staff that they would get this error message, click it off and proceed. BIG MISTAKE! As soon as we clicked the ENTER icon, numbers appeared at the lower left hand corner (as if something is updating). No matter what record we viewed when we began this process, that record was revised by the data entry process, instead of a new record being entered. After an entire business day of trying to correct this, I spent 9 hours on Saturday trying to recreate the card stack form. I had the revision working just fine by 7pm and decided I would wait until this morning (Monday) to quality check it and set the tabs. As soon as the tab orders were set, I saved the form and was ready to go to network optimize.

Except that the form is missing except for the background color! When I click the edit icon, everything is there. When I save it, it disappears!

Anyone have an idea where I went wrong? How can I get my work back?

There is a property for each item on a form which can be set as "hidden'. Don't know why it would happen but is it possible that each form object has this property set?
    There can be only one.

Stan--Great idea, but that's not it! None of them have the "hide" box checked. I even tried activating "hide" and saving and turning off "hide," but to no avail.

      And thanks--Beth

Can you attach a sample of the table and support files here? You could even attach a copy with all the data removed.

what would the file extension be? I cannot find it anywhere on my desktop or my server or anywhere in the Alpha program file. also, how do I attach it once I find it?

In the control panel, right click on the table or set name upon which the form is based. Choose zip. Note where the file is saved. Reply to this message. Scroll down below the "Submit Reply" button and choose Manage Attachments. You can browse to the location of the zip file and upload it there.

              Thanks Stan.

I think the forms are attached to this table and not the set.
The forms that are problems are pub3 (it disappears when leaving edit) and the original one has the missing field is called publications. If they are not here, the file is MUCH bigger for the set.

I was able to restore the form by

                Opening pubs3 in design mode
                Access control panel
                Create new, blank form
                Access pubs3
Copy everything but the tabbed object
Switch to new blank form, paste, arrange as needed
                Switch to pubs3
                Copy the tabbed object
                Switch to new form, paste
Position tabbed object as necessary (don't worry about how it looks at the moment)
Save new form as test, close
                Close pubs3
Open test, should be like you want it, experiment as necessary
When satisfied, delete pubs3, open test, save as pubs3

I can send your table back to you but I had trouble with the production info browse (invalid field) when I was poking around, and I don't want to mess up your live application.

Hey Stan, I probably should start a new thread for this but you've been great so far...

Everything went well last night. I set the network optimizer and left for much needed yoga practice. Came in late this am and heard from one person:

What's all the fuss about the Alpha program? Mine works fine, but nothing's different.

It seems his machine never got the first change (7.94), nor the new revision which is 7.95. On further inspection he is running 7.0! Since he is on the network and we have enough copies for everyone, why is his machine not hearing from mine when I optimize? Where do I go and what do I do to correct this?

Not really sure what you mean.

You network optimizing has no effect on any other users. If you are the developer and have the database on a server, the users need to access the database on the server and network optimize their machines. After that they can refresh shadow to keep up.

I would guess that the one user with the old version is accessing either a local copy (entire database) of the 7.0 application or an older copy on the server. You can verify this by making some data change from that machine and observing the result in your 7.95 database. You can also examine the shortcut used to start the application from that machine vs the others.
