Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple posts

    We have a whole bunch of DBF files which we wanted to post into a master database is there any fast way without having to re-create a post operation for each individual dBase file ?
    also, is there any way to look at the files while creating the post because they don't have the same field names?

    Re: Multiple posts

    David, I don't understand. Typically one does not "post" files into a "database". Are you talking about "appending" records to a "table"? "Posting" field values to a "table"? or something else?

        database?

        post?

        Sorry to be so dense. Maybe an example would help.

        A post is different from an append.

        A table is different from a database.

        An example will help us understand what you are trying to say.

              David,

              There is no expense involved in giving us a detailed explanation of what you want to do. You also need to consider Alpha terminology.

              For Alpha a post operation takes information from one table and places it in records in another table for those records with some matching link value.

              An append operation takes records from one table and adds them to another table. The append can add all records or just records where a value in a designated field doesn't exist in a matching field in the table being added to. It can also overwrite records in the table being added to.

              You say you want to post records from ten tables to one master table but that doesn't make sense to us. How would you know whether a value posted on one operation wasn't overwritten by the next operation?

              Wanting to append records from ten tables to one master table seems more likely. You cannot design one append operation and use it on ten differently named tables with differently named fields.

              Have you considered renaming the fields in all ten tables to be the same? Is this a one time process or will it be repeated periodically?
              There can be only one.

                looking at sample upper there is a post command with a name (last)which posts
                replace the title and first names from the file F:\all new\Mon101203.Dbf we have 10 files similar to F:\all new\Mon101203.Dbf which we want to run the procedure without having to modify field by field by changing the 3 column in the expression group

                    Re: Multiple posts

                    after renaming the fields in all ten tables to be the same name would there be a simple script to run one file after the other one post after the other without having to manually change the expression just by inputting only the *.dbf name

                      Re: Multiple posts

                      Running this script will ask you to locate the file to be posted from and then it will perform the post.

                      Code:
                      rslt = ui_get_file("Open Table to Post", "Table(*.DBF)", "","X")
                      tblnm = file.filename_parse(rslt,"n")

                      a_tbl = table.open("sample upper")
                      post.t_db = rslt
                      post.m_key = "left(Last,5)+left(Add,6)"
                      post.t_key = "left(Last,5)+left(Add,6)"
                      post.m_filter = "Title=\"\""
                      post.t_filter = ""
                      post.m_count = 2
                      post.m_field1 = "TITLE"
                      post.m_exp1 = "@"+tblnm+"->Title"
                      post.m_field2 = "FIRST"
                      post.m_exp2 = "@"+tblnm+"->First"
                      post.t_count = 0

                      a_tbl.post()
                      a_tbl.close()
                      There can be only one.
