Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

disappearing fields & object names increment

I've had a couple problems in the last week with fields disappearing from a form. They are still checked in the DragDrop box, and can be selected using Object Explorer. I can also "get them back" by toggling the Always On Top to True (in Object Explorer), but then have to go to properties to uncheck that value so they are not always on top (a must for tabbed objects). So I can get back bound fields, but any fields bound to variables are simply gone and have to be recreated.

A probably related problem is that the Object Names of all fields on the form (all at once) increment by one (Name becomes Name0, etc.). And so I have to go one-by-one and rename them back to their original names.

    v6, latest patches. Windows XP/SP2.

    Any ideas?

This sounds like multiple copies of the same field object. Alpha renames them since each object must have a unique name. Manually "renaming" them probably does nothing. I'd delete them instead. -- tom

Yes, but there is only one copy of each field, nothing to delete. I'm referring to ALL objects on the form, all at once incrementing their object names (fields, labels, browses, buttons, frames, etc.)

Perhaps it's a corrupted form. If the form is not too complex, maybe you can re-create it from scratch? Otherwise, I wonder if it is a naming issue?

My guess is that this form has a tabbed object on it and possibly some conditional objects??

If so, I've run into similar problems. They arose when the conditionals and tabs started becoming complex. It was apparently rather like putting tabbed forms on tabbed forms on tabbed forms on tabbed forms - eventually A5 said, "I can't handle this any more!" When I closed a form and re-opened it, some of the fields "disappeared". Turned out they were still there but the only way I could find them was to carefully move everything that was visible by selecting each object separately out of the way. When nothing else was visible in the normal space for the form, I "lassoed" the whole blank area. Guess what - all my missing fields were there! I could see all the little black squares around the borders but that was all. They could not be moved forward. My only choice was to delete them and start over.

Correction. Selecting individually probably won't work either because you may pick up some of the "hidden" objects. Lasso the visible stuff by holding down the minus key on the number pad and move the objects to another area of the form.
