Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Mike:
you have a matrix of 140 buttons, each has a script that runs 14 steps, each step involves evaluating 3 expressions, and after each button is evaluated and drawn, the screen has to re-paint, that is repainting 140 times !!

This is not scientific, but my experience tells me, the thing that slows alpha considerably is screen re-painting.

      You are correct to say:
"There must be a beter way to handle this sort of graphical presentation"
The button approach is not the way to go.

The screenshot I posted, pops up instantaneously, but for some reason is not what you want. I have another idea, but I am not exactly sure, what is it you wish to accomplish beyond what I posted?

RE: Chainging Button Properties Veeeerrrrry Slow1

        Hi all,
I am having the same problem in two action scripts that hide several objects and disable several others. The scripts are running increadibly slow and I am wondering if there is a way to fix this in action script. I see some people are using xbasic_synchronous()in there script but how can I use this if I am using action script, or do I need to convert it to xbasic (I would rather not)?
        Thanks,
        Walter

          Gabe,

Try Mikes app in ver 5 (I did). It is noticably MUCH faster!

RE: Chainging Button Properties Veeeerrrrry Slow1

Just insert an "inline xbasic" command using action scripting and paste in the command: xbasic_synchronous().

Obviously, put it before the object refresh stuff.

RE: Chainging Button Properties Veeeerrrrry Slow1

              Hi all,
Thanks for the help but it didn't work for me. I think my problem doesn't have anything to do with the scripts because I deleted them to see if that would help and it didn't. I seems I only have the problem with users that are logged in as any other group other then Administrators. Is this posible, has anyone else ever had this problem? I disabled all the startup scripts as well and it didn't help. The problem is when I go from a Menu form to another form by clicking a button on the Menu form. The onpush event only has an open form action script in it and it is only realy slow the first time the form is opened after logging in. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
              Thanks,
              Walter

                I stopped unzipping files.
I would imagine it will be faster in V5. I am sure with all the added features in V6, it's bound to be slower.

I don't see why that necessarily follows. MS-Word & MS-Excel have lots of features and are pretty snappy. Ditto for AutoCAD (which has a gazillion features). Same for lots of other BIG programs...

"I don't see why that necessarily follows"
It shouldn't, but in most softwares, it does. All the applications you referenced, if you check their older versions, you might notice the same.

More features means more files to open. Remeber how Windows 93 used to open, compared to 98 compared to XP? Remeber DOS?

I do not unzip files anymore, as many parts will remain in the registery and you have to go and take them out one by one. Not a big deal, and probably not a big problem to leave them there, except, I like to keep things as simple as possible.

It works great in my runtime. Make sure you have the latest patch for your runtime.

Sure, there is some truth in what you say. But I don't think that just because v6 has web capability and other features that the object refresh should take longer. It would seem to me, the slowness has to do with structural changes within Alpha, not the addition of "new features". I'm sure that Alpha can cure this temporary slowdown.

                          Sorry Gabe,

The screenshot you sent me looks to give the try of result
A am imagining this is based on an embedded browse, an approach which I tried

Unfortunately this browse must be built dyamically every time, since the bookings file has only the checkin and checkout date and so a matrix must be built for every days inbeween these dates accross all units for which there are bookings. When I did it this was I found that it was too slow given that I was allowing the user to press a botton to advance through the grid a day at a time.

This is why I started the button approach as I though by minimising access to the database (ie: need to read bookings table only without having to populate dynamic tables) - fo speed - but I did not get it.

If you did any different to ths, I would appeciate knowing how - as I do agree the button appraoch is nt very scientific and it also painstaking slow to implement.
