Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5_get_records_in_query() #HELP#

    Hi folks...I'd like to make use of the
    A5_get_records_in_query()
    function after running an action script querry-
    perhaps to display the count on a form,
    perhaps to display a message if there are no matching
    records, etc., etc. This neophyte needs to know where
    to insert that snippet of code (I know I can convert my
    action scripts to xbasic code and insert more code...)

    I've tried using a type-in field that I setup as
    a variable, then tried to set it's value by trying to
    use the A5_get_records_in_query() in some clumsy
    (and incorrect!) fashion, so, please...

    I need some generic help as to the proper use of the
    A5_get_records_in_query() function and how to present
    or work with the returned value. My thanks, as always!

    I'm not real familiar with this function, it's one of the newer items added to Alpha Five. However, the documentation for it suggests to me that you would not find this suitable to get the current record count after running a query. This function seems designed to return the count that you would get if you were to run a query. I fear that if you use it after having run a query independently, this function would again query the table to give you the count. Running two queries back to back often slows things down quite a bit.

      Mark, you might check the status line at the bottom of your screen, after you run your action scripting query. Usually you'll see the number of records in the query displayed there automatically. You may find you don't need to use A5_get_records_in_query() -- tom

        RE: A5_get_records_in_query() #HELP#

        Tom, my guess is you are right...I think the
        below snippet is more likely what I need,
        but I'm still at a loss as to where and how
        to "plug it in" and how to "get at" the
        numeric value that it returns. Can anyone give
        me some generic advice? You already have my
        thanks in advance!

        This expression returns the number of records in the current query.

        a5_get_records_in_query(current_filter_expn())

          Yeah, I know the count shows up down below, but I
          really need to be able to display that info on my
          form, use it for other purposes and so forth.
          Whatever sticks the count at the bottom of the
          screen is probably very close to what I need, but
          I can't seem to unearth it...

            Mark,

            here's an example for you. Unzip the attachment to an empty folder. Browse the records in the only table you find. Then open the form. You'll find a button that uses the function to get a count of members who live in AZ. This figure is then displayed in a text box on the form. A second button will re-set that count to zero.

            Have fun figuring out how it works.

            -- tom

            ps. You might find the example I posted to the Code Archive forum called "Pass values between forms" useful, also.

              RE: A5_get_records_in_query() #HELP#

              Just for information, the A5_get_records_in_query() does indeed run a query. The function appears to open the table, set the query parameters, run the query, get the records from the query using .records_get(), rest the index back to its previous state, and close the table. The only advantage over writing the above actions directly in xbasic is convenience. There is no speed difference. However, if you use the function more than once back to back, you may run into timing issues.

                Hey, you take the time to whip up a teaching
                sample for me, I gotta take the time to express
                my thanks, Tom! That should get me going...

                The dim AZ_mbrs as N and
                AZ_mbrs = a5_get_records_in_query

                is what I was missing, ie, defining the variable and accessing it!
                I remember learning all that in Delphi...I even think 'dim'
                was the key word there also. My thanks again, my unseen friend,
                for being so kind as to take the time to set me in the proper direction.

                I'll fiddle with
                a5_get_records_in_query(current_filter_expn())
                this in the same fashion. Ciao!
