Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating a runtime application

I want to run an Alpha 5 application on a customers computer.

    The application is developed.

I have both the full version of Alpha 5 and the 3 user Runtime installed on my development platform.

I want the customer to see the startup form, but without the Alpha 5 environment behind it. Just the form.
(I've added a secret hotspot where I can call up the control panel, ....)

I'll deliver the "database application" on a CD, and either install it myself or create an elaborate installer. (I've created installers before.)

I haven't yet been able to create the application so that it starts up without the Alpha 5 container environment appearing behind it. I created a shortcut.

I've looked through documentation and help files. Not finding this, or there's a bug, or I'm not doing it properly, or ... it can't be done. ;)

    Newbie aren't I?
Sorry to have missed the Conference.
    /Rob

    RE: Creating a runtime application

    Robert,

    Alpha uses splash.bmp.

Create your own splash and make sure it gets loaded into the same folder as the application.

    Have fun splashing.

      RE: Creating a runtime application

      Robert,

The command in your shortcut gives you control for starting your application. In addition to the command, you may choose to use a startup file to make it easier to manage the "switches" for startup.

This is the command from my shortcut:

      "C:\Program Files\A5V6\alpha5.exe" "C:\Program Files\DRMS\CORE\DATABASE\DRMS.adb" -INCLUDE="C:\Program Files\DRMS\CORE\DATABASE\DRMS.startup"

My startup file contains the following switches:

      -TITLE="Digital Record Managment System"
      -SPLASH="Splash Screen2.bmp"
      -ICON="DRMS.ico"
      -MAXIMIZE

The splash screen is optional. If you don't want a splash screen, use the switch: NOSPLASH instead of -SPLASH="somefile"

If you choose to create your own splash screen, you will find a lack of control as to size. The only way to control size is to do it in the file itself. I started with a large file which was fine on my development machine, but looked terrible on a smaller monitor. I kept tweaking until I arrived at a size of 5.44"Wide X 3.52"High. You can use MSPaint to modify the attributes of the BMP file. I've attached my splash screen.

You will find more information on command line switches here:

      Good Luck,

Sorry about the large file. I realized I hadn't reduced the resolution after I attached it. Here is a smaller one.

            Thanks Tom,

The photo was one I took in Reno at a friend's house. I used it to create the Shortcut Icon graphic too. I also used it to create a long narrow graphic to fill the blank space in the custom menus of the application.

Nothing to do with a splash screen.

              Hey oh,

There's an Alpha 5 container behind my form.

The Alpha 5 environment appearing behind form is what I want to hide. I just want the user to see my form. Nothing else.

              Can this be done??

                Robert,

In design mode, from the menu bar select Form and Form Properties. From the tabs select Menus and Toolbars. Change them all to None. You must make sure you have a button or hot spot to close the form and activate the Control Panel.

RE: Nothing to do with a splash screen.

But how do I get rid of the "container environment" altogether?

There's still this window behind the form.

Is there no way to get rid of it?

                  Thanks.
(attached now shows the changes with the "none" settings.
