Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Report problems

I apologize for the lack of a table. I think that this zip file has what is needed - it was constructed using the email the file.

        RE: Report problems

        Mary,

First, it's a very nice report.

        I see several issues:

-The zip file reveals (as I speculated) that your application is spread over several folders. In general this is a bad plan if only because it prevents you from moving your application (or a copy) to another folder on the same or a different machine. In consequence, I could not open the zip of your application as sent.

-I moved your table files to the same folder as your database files. Then I dropped the originals (in control panel) and added the new (that is, moved) tables. This worked--I was able to open your application and run the report.

-The blank field in fact has no object in the report design. It may have been deleted, why I know not. But the space is blank because there is no field there to print.

-In Ver.6 when I try to edit your calc fields (in report design) Alpha5 freezes. Nothing to be done.

-I opened your application (new copy) in Ver.5 and was able to open the calculated field dialog. No freeze. The expression for the missing field you give in your post generates an invalid expression warning.

This is as far as I've gone. As you see, there are several suspicious factors. The report may merely be corrupt. The many calculated fields based on other calculated fields may produce circular references.

I'll investigate further as time permits but it's a busy time.

          RE: Report problems

Sorry - I took the field out of the report thinking that I would recreate the expression and put that in. I shall see what I can do about locating and moving the files to a single folder - at least in the original, which is on the server. At least that make Alpha 5 feel less twisted. I never received an invalid expression warning. The first hint that I had done something wrong would be a message when I closed the calculated field box that I should review the trace window because there were 44 error messages. After getting this a couple of times, and recreating all the fields, I made sure never to save anything when this message came up.

Thank you for tackling my problem.
          Mary
