Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Passing Variables between Forms

    Greetings!

I've been working to resolve this problem I've been having. I've been posting in the Alpha Five version 5 forum and just realized that. I"m using Alpha 6 1534:2007.

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?num=11&offset=0&thread=73577&sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&id=73659

Is the link. Here's a basic description of the problem.

I'm having some trouble passing a variable between two forms, and I know it's because I"m missing something simple.

I Have a Set that contains the data for a shipment of lumber. The parent contains the information about who sent it and when it was recieved. There is a child table which contains the different types of species and amounts that are on that shipment.

I have a form with a browse for that set. The form displays the data such as who sent the shipment and when it was recieved. The browse contains a list of items and amounts that were on the shipment.

The browse is read only so that the user doesn't accidently change the data, or add extra data. There is a button which opens a form for the entry of items specifically for this Shipment.

I want to copy the shipment number and add it to the form that gets opened so that the user does not re-type the shipment number and accidnetly make a mistake.

We've done pretty much everything in the post, and I have re-named all my tables/forms/variables to names without spaces.

    Any help would be appreciated.

In the code archive Tom Cone posted a routine for passing values between forms . Check that out, it may help you.

      RE: Passing Variables between Forms

      Jonathan,

I reworked your scripts using A5V6. Found it difficult to use the OnInit event in the called form to do the processing, so elected to do it from the calling form instead. Your validation rules in the Cuttings table were getting in the way (referenced tables that had later been renamed). I also removed blank spaces from the form names. Finally, I refreshed the browse in the calling form using the Save and Return button on the called form.

The attachment should be unzipped to an empty folder.

        Tom,

Thank you for your help in this matter. The attachment from the above post only contains the Database which I posted. It didn't contain the changes that you mentioned you made.

I was able to get it to work based on what you said that you did and the example database you posted on variable passing for A5v5.

An interesting thing which I saw was that on your posted database example the only method that worked was the one you mentioned above. Having the calling form set the data on the called form. The other two methods of you posted example for A5v5 does not work in A5v6. Perhaps there's a bug in A5v6 which doesn't allow the 2 methods to work.

I figured I'd let you know so that you can go back and look at it and perhaps find out why those 2 methods don't work on your posted example and perhaps /bug it if that's the case.

        Thanks again for your help,

        Jon Short
