Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

record added not showing in lookup

ugggg, will I ever get things to work the first time out? OK that was a rhetorical question and does not require an answer LOL!

I am adding features to my client's db. They do NOT like the enter record feature that they get when using the lookup in the customer ID. So I have created a 'enter new customer' button for them.

When they click on the button my code saves the current invoice and opens the customer data entry form that I created specifically for coming from the invoice data entry form.

On my new customer form I have a button that returns to invoice. When clicking on this button the current form (new customer) checks to see if the record has been saved and saves it if it has not, then closes this form.

Since I did not close my invoice data entry form upon arrival to the new customer form, I am returned to the current invoice. All of this works great and as I need it to.

Here is my problem. Now that I am at the invoice that I began to enter, in the customer ID lookup field, if I type in the cust_id that I just entered, it does not appear in my list of available customers. I went back to my customer table and the new record has in fact been saved and is available.

Why is this new record not available in my lookup on the invoice form? I have tried adding show all records to the onarrive event of my cust_id field on the invoice form but that did not do anything.

I have tested further and went to a brand new invoice and the new records I added in the customer table are not available at all. I have closed the application and A5 and the new customers I added still are not available to me on my invoice form.

Any ideas as to why new customers do not show in my lookup?

RE: record added not showing in lookup

NOTE TO SELF: When making changes to your database in design/structure, etc ... be sure to follow your changes throughout the application. A5 gives you a warning when changing things that says, are you sure you want to proceed as this may effect other areas of your application? There is a reason for this warning.

I have resolved the issue. I changed the location of my client's db files to match where I placed it on his computer so I could make design changes and not have to worry about path issues. HENCE, my problem was in fact a path issue, the reason I moved the files in the first place, hahaha

In my initial application I had the client files located in c:\db\target\ ... I moved his db to c:\target_db\ which is where I have the application installed on his system.

I did NOT follow through my changes ... my table lookup in the field rules for the invoice table was searching the t_cust.dbf in the db\target\ directory structure ... naturally when I am currently adding new customers, they are in the t_cust.dbf in the target_db directory.

Once I changed the table in my field rules to the proper location, all is working as it should. Sorry to have bothered, but maybe somebody will learn from my mistake and not repeat it :)

check all the fields of that and adjacent records in a default browse, and see if the "new customer" has all the same fields filled. Also, do you have an index on the customerid field - if not, add one, and give the index the same name as the customerid.

Martin, thanks for the suggestions. I am sure you were writing your post as I was posting my resolution :) Just another blonde moment on my part, as usual.
