Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    masking a date field

OK, I am suddenly extremely blonde again ... how do I mask a date field?

I am able to setup a default date using an expression for today date(), however, the customer would like the ability to change that date. When they go to change the date they get a blank field and can then type in 08/10/2004 ... however they want the / / to already be there so they just type 08 10 2004 .....

Can this be done? If so, please lead me to the water so that I can drink it **winks**

    RE: masking a date field

    Cheryl,

The date slashes are already there for a date field. A blank date may possibly not show the slashes, but in enter/change mode the slashes are there and you just have to enter in 4 or more numbers.

Character fields holding date values is another matter. Is that what yoiu are talking about?

      RE: masking a date field

      Hi Ira,

Yes I am using a date field. And you are correct that the '/' are there, normally. But I have a field rule set to default to the current date ... date() ... with this in place it does not allow me to change the default date :(

I have tried setting the default date as a calculated field and as user entered with the data entry set to default value. Either way it does not allow me to modify the date field. It allows me to begin entering the date, ie I type '0' and when I go to type the 8, it does nothing ... and my '0' is red :( It does not even let me out of the field after that or put today's date back.

      Any ideas would be appreciated.

      Thanks
      Cheryl

        RE: masking a date field

I believe this might be a bug in V6. I opened the backup in V5 and with the default value set I am still allowed to modify this date and it does give me the '/' so I do have my cake and I can eat it to. I have sent the required info to Alpha .....

BUT ..... does anybody have a possible work around for me?????

          Cheryl

Have the same problem but different. The first time I attempt to change the date the keyboard locks & I get error "invalid date". However if I retype it a second time(no "/") it works !!.

Thanks for confirming that John. I did not try a second time after I was locked up. I did include this message post with my email to Alpha so they should see that :)

Now you were supposed to give me a work-a-round ... shame on you LOL

              RE: masking a date field

              Cheryl,

Also noticed this behavior/bug with date fields.
I posted it with message id 1443, but only got one response/confirmation.

The best thing to do is of course to wait for a new build where it is fixed.

              But if you can't wait:
I stated in my message that deleting or using F2/clicking anywhere in the field works, but you can't burder your customer with this.
So do it for him, set the OnArrive event of the field to:
              sys_send_keys("{F2}{HOME}")

Don't forget to remove this code when the bug is fixed, or leave it when you prefer entering in edit mode with no selection.

              Hope it helps.

              Jos
