Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Selecting Indexes on the Form

I have a simple one table databse and single form right now. I've indexed the table on two fields. How do I:

    1. Select which index is active when the form loads.
    2. Put an 'Index selector" on the form?

    Thanks

RE: Selecting Indexes on the Form

    David,

    1. You can set the index in Form Properties - Filter/Order with the order expression field.
    2. The toolbar already has a button for this, but you could add a button to the form and use Action Scripting - Select Index dialog or Set Index.

        Jos -

Suggestion 2 works great - thank you.

        On suggestion 1

"1. You can set the index in Form Properties - Filter/Order with the order expression field. "

I do not see an option to actually select the index already created for the field - just choices to view the filed sorted either ascending or descending. Is this equivalent to specifying the index iteslf? It appears to work that way. Thanks -DW

While in the order builder, click on the drop down arrow for the sort by: you should see the following options:

          record number
          your fields
          expression

            David,

For as I know, you're right with the expression order - index usage.
When you set the expression order and defined an index that can be used, A5 will do so.

RE: Selecting Indexes on the Form

It doesn't look to me that you can actually select the index of the table in the "Form Properties, filter/order" tab. It lloks like it A5 creates a query and uses the querry to order the fields. The reason I say this is I did place a button on the form to change indexes, and the querys appear in the list with the index files I created explicitly in the table desing mode. Could it be that to use a table with a specific index, you need to specify this in the table box in the "form Properties, Filter/order tab"? Sort of like the old Dbase command of "Use TABELNAME index INDEXNAME" ?

RE: Selecting Indexes on the Form

                Have you tried this:

Highlight your table, from the menu above select table, define indexes. After that do your indexes appear in the filter/order list?

Also, can you not select the 'expression' choice from that drop down and put your expression in there?

                  You can use action scripting.

                    David, you can:

                    1. Create a drop down list box to select an index or...
                    2. Click on the Query Menu and choose Select Index/Query or...
                    3. Press Ctrl-I

You also might want to review some of the menus and check out the selections.

                      Ken -

Thanks, I have it working much the way I want. However, I still cannot find a way on the form properties to tell A5 to use a specific Index for the record order. You can use either a "fliter expression" or an "order expression". This are queries, I believe. And it seems to work fine, but I'm curious as to whether a specific index can be specified for the form to use to show records in a certain order. Atached is a screen shot of the drop down bow I get on my form. I have a command button that lists indexes by using the onpush action of: "execute menu command 'Query/select index/query'. When that button is pused, you will see the screen I have in the attached file. It lists the query I specified in the forms property for "order expression" , as well as two explicit indexes I created in the table design mode for the table.

My question is why can't I specify using one of these two indexes - rather than a query for the form's record viewing behavior? I would think there is a way to do it, but how?

Don't look at the form properties for this functionality. Use the form events, like the OnInit to set the index with action scripting or xbasic.

Just curious, I will look in the Xbasic help, but you mention action scripting for this, but I was not able to find any actions for Openig a table or selecting an index to use. Did I miss it?

You don't need to open the table. It's already open by the form.

The action script was in a message I posted to this thread #1779
