Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL select and ADO

Can I use a SQL statement when connecting with ADO to a mySql DB? I have looked through the help and it appears possible but when I try to use SQL the genie adds the table twice and I can't remove it:

SELECT id FROM input WHERE id " 5

    becomes

SELECT id FROM input input WHERE id " 5

which obviously throws a SQL error

Further to my last, I have also noticed that "Fields in View" does not show any of the fields even though my connection appears to be looking.

      RE: SQL select and ADO

"SELECT id FROM input input WHERE id " 5 "

This is correct syntax and is not adding the table twice.... the second "input" is the table alias.

        Thanks Aaron

I thought the syntax for an alias used AS?

I still get a SQL error for syntax:

"You have an error in your SQL syntax near '{call value}' at line 1"

Also when I click Fields in view, I can't see any of the fields from the table

I still can't get this to work in either web components or using xdialog and ADO. Can anyone help?

            RE: SQL select and ADO

Chris, maybe some screen shots would help me decipher your problem.

"AS" is used for column aliases, but for table aliases, one can just follow the table name with an alias.

            You might want to try

            SELECT input.id from input input where input.id " 5

The screen shot of the error is attached. If I try using the filter and order, which is effectively writing the SQL for you , I can get it to work but not using the sql select statement.

It would be helpful if you could send me more shots of the genies (the dialog the comes up after Edit SQL), so I have a feel for what you are doing when this error comes up.

                Thanks

                  RE: SQL select and ADO

I have got some more screen shots but they all give the same error as before - I don't know how useful they will be. Whatever I do I get the same error as previously. If I use the table or view option I can get the query to work but not if I use sql select.

Once I click on sql select I get the edit sql option. I click on that, I get Sql Builder. I select the Sql text tab, enter the sql. Click ok, my server responds with the error attached to the previous message. It then puts this sql query in the read only select sql box.

If I use the builder tab, it finds the input table and assigns the alias. I click ok which opens the define join dialog. I don't want a join and when I click ok I get the error message as before. I clear the error message and click Fields in view but no fields appear even though I can see activity on the server. From here on in I just get the error that the sql statement is invalid.

Sorry this is so long winded but it is driving me nuts! Lenny did give a personalised update as I had trouble connecting to the WAS activation server due to satellite latency - I presume there is no connection here? Clutching at straws!
