Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form Pages

I'm trying to create a form that has multiple pages, as I have too many fields to show on one single page. I don't see an option to "add a page", although I've seen multiple page forms created automatically by the Alpha Five sofware for default forms.

Does anybody know how to add pages to a form?

    Thanks,
    Rich Hartnett

P.S., Having fun experimenting with this new v6 software!

I noticed there is a page break object on the toolbox. I have never used it so I'm not sure it will provide you the solution your looking for.

      Richard,

You cannot 'add a page' as you can do in the paper and pencil world since Alpha doesn't recognize an 8.5" * 11" as a 'page'. You CAN create a form longer (from top to bottom) than can be viewed on one screen, thereby necessitating vertical scrolling. However, I personally don't think that is very appealing. My personal preference in that situation is a tabbed subform, in which logically grouped fields appear on one page (insurance-related information on the 'Insurance' tab, evaluation-related information on the 'Evaluation' tab, etc.). You can also use conditional objects and flip their visibility either based on a certain condition (Gender is 'F' set the female-specific fields to visible) or when a button is clicked.

Either of these methods allows you to have more information on one screen than is possible if everything was visible and junking up the screen.

        Richard,

Steve is right, but the length that is visible will depend on the resolution on your system. Even using this new feature, I prefer the other methods, but that is just my opinion.

          Rich,

I for one have better luck using tabs if there is not too much.

            Thanks Dave,

Tabbed sub-forms is actually what I'm looking for. What's the easiest way to create the sub forms, as I've never done it before.

Disregard my last request. I figured out how to make the tabbed pages. (It's amazing what you can find out when you research the tutorial manual!!!)

Thanks Guys - you've been a big help!

                Richard,

From the CP, click on the Forms tab and then on the 'New' button. From the toolbox, click on the 'Tabbed Object' (you may have to scroll down to see it). Then, set the size of the tab and place fields on the first tab. You can right click on the 'Page 1' tab and change its properties to suit you preferences. Then click on 'Page 2' and repeat the process. From the 'Tabbed Object Properties', you can add more tabs, if needed.

There is also a new option for V6 - you can select various sides to anchor.

Play with the various settings and checkboxes to get a feel of how it all works.
