Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report filter question

I have a set with 'clients' and 'entries' tables linked by a client_code key. The clients table contains fields for the client's name and address while the entries table has fields for invoices etc details.

A report layout groups each clients->client_code to detail that client's entries. A 'balance' calculated field totals the entries->amount field.

Runtime report parameters are prompted for entered before the Preview of the Layout is run. These are prompts for the 'Start Client Code' and 'End Client Code' So that the operater can select a single client or a range.

Problem: how can the report be filtered to ignore statements if a client has a zero 'balance'? I'm sure it must be easy to do but would appreciate help.

You'll need to use tablesum() or dbsum() to get the balance. Something like

    tablesum("entries","client_code = ' "+client_code+" ' ","amount")

    "anded" with your current filter.
    There can be only one.

      Report filter problem

Stan - I have been trying tablesum and when I add this as an expression the report doesn't run because the code is invalid - I have tried the tablesum code in another report and it runs ok as a report filter but I think the problem is when I try to combine it with the prompt parameters in the same runtime filter. That's why I wondered if anyone had approached it differently. Thanks. Mike

If the code is invalid the filter for the tablsum() must be invalid due to the context. Addressing the proper client code in

        "client_code = ' "+client_code+" ' "

        is likely the problem.

If you care to attach a sample set, tables and support files I'll take a look.

                Complex filter

Must have lost track of this.

My attachment demonstrates a different way of accomplishing the behavior you want, I think.

The filter for the statements reports is embedded in the report and refers to the variables I created.

Stan. Your report runs perfectly. Thanks. However, I am locked out of the design option when I drop down into the control panel. Did you put a hotspot on the form? Mike

I put a close button in the bottom right corner. That should let you out.

I used that but I am still locked out of design when I click onto the control panel form or report. Mike

Stan. I went out of alpha 6 and went back in. When I re-opened the database all was well! Thank you very much for your help on my problem. Mike
