Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Detect Internet Connection

    Hello There,

I have created an automatic program activation routine, where my clients can activate their app via active internet connection.

Is there a way to detect if there is an active connection and if not, ask the user to connect.

    Thanks
    Walter

Looks like HTTP_FETCH( Settings as P [, Show_Before_Send as L ] ) might do the trick for testing availability.

The webhelp says (a result of) "Status code 200 indicates that the page exists.

So testing for a result code of 200 would tell you if the internet connection was available and able to reach your authorization page.
    There can be only one.

Your computer doesn't know the difference between an "Internet Connection" and any other network connection, so the only way to do this is to query some known site, such as google.com or microsoft.com, etc. If you receive a response, you are connected to the Internet. If not, you aren't.

And this can easily be done using hostavailable()

Ira, I know your reply is tongue-in-cheek, but...

Presumably if you want to contact a specific host, you would use that in hostavailable() instead of google.com anyway. Then if your connection is working but the server's is not, you still know you can't reach your ultimate destination.

              But Lenny,

I need to make more posts to have my 1372, now 1373 posts catch up to Stan's 6630 posts.

Someone either has way too much time on their hands or is obssessed with Alpha! (but a true asset to the forum!)

You'd better watch out for Tom Cone Jr who leads the pack at 12,486 posts. :)

So Tom has almost twice as much time on his hands, is twice as obsessed, and probably twice as smart since his posts are generally better answers than mine.

I've got a long way to go to catch up and the post edit feature is really slowing me down. All my self corrections used to count as separate posts.

But again, this counts as another post.

Walter...please explain? You have a way to activate a db you created and distribute via the net? I use RCheck by Jerry Brightbill for my security and would love to see how to activate one via the net! This would be very good.

                      Hello Kevin,

                      How are you doing?
This routine is very simple yet very effective.
Is is based on his business name, a unique app identifier and machine name.
Because most of my app's are rented on a monthly basis, the user had to phone me every month for the new activation code.

Now he simply click on activate via internet, the app download the encrypted file, do the checks, and delete all traces of the files needed to activate.
                      All this done automatically!
You can also determine for how long the app should be active, especially on month end, the user's forgot to pay, then you can activate it for him for another day or so.
And it is very easy to set up into an existing app.

Unfortunately, I cannot go into too much details, otherwise it will have no use! But I think you get the picture?!!

                      Have a nice day
                      Walter

Hi Walter. Doing ok. Hope you are as well.
Very impressive. I will have to look into this for my app. I would love to have them activate via the net. Good Job!
