Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Ray:
There was a help file from Sept. 7 that had a whole list of new features about v8. From what I understand, that is no longer available in the new help downloads. Here is one example of the browse update. There are supposed to also be "browse" buttons that allow you to edit and delete directly from the browse.

I have that help file and those two changes (i.e. buttons and colors) do not represent a "new browse". However, it seems that the A5 staff has gone into deep stealth mode on their v8 programming effort, so they might surprise us yet.

I hope I can turn them off, this is just one more thing I have to worry about when it comes to my users bypassing my application flow. I dont need buttons.

          Thankx for the response.

Interesting that the updated A5v7 help file, updated as of mid august, is entitled "Alpha Five version 8"...

Are the lads getting a bit ahead of themselves? Should I consider the help file reliable?

                what are you migrating from?

I think the posting of the V8 help was a momentary error - I have a copy if anyone wants it.

I can't tell you what to do, but if you provide an Alpha document that is not publically available, and was removed probably because they don't want it to be public (yet), you are probably not doing the right thing.

Right or not, there is certainly a huge demand from the A5 community for functionality which is available is your major competitor and has been for quite some time. I think it's about time for A5 to at least tell people what the roadmap is ... are there plans to implement 2-way connectivity to backend databases on the desktop?

If this is planned for 2010 (or whenever), at least we could make a decision whether to hang with A5 until then or bail. The fact is, as many others have said, we NEED this functionality far more than prettier web screens, or more XBasic commands. If there are no plans to implement it, then I feel A5 will lose many customers. If A5 simply doesn't answer the question, they'll lose at least one, because this issue is crucial to future development in my shop.

All I keep seeing is this is planed for ver 5, then ver 6, then 7, then ver 8
So it looks like they keep us hanging on version after version. David I agree
                              WE NEED A ROADMAP.

I understand things come up and development need to change but come on
take the browse for example this was going to be fixed version after version
just do a search and you will see, I understand maybe missing the fix/rewrite for one or two versions but come on.

Selwyn this is in no way meant to bash you, as we all know Alpha Five has come a long way
but things that are already in Alpha need to be fixed and updated such as the browse, this is of high pri to allot of users as I see it including me. I just think you should have someone working on fixing/updating whats already in Alpha Five.

If you dont have the staff to focus on some of these concerns maybe its time to commision out
these long awaited fixes, I am sure Steve would not mind helping you :D

Steve, if they put it out publicly, in error or not, it's fair game in my view. Anyway, there are no secrets in there, basically the same stuff they told us at the conference.

I agree Alpha should provide a roadmap and some kind of timeframe - or tell us that ver. X will have the new browse, ver X+1 will have Client-Server, etc. Otherwise people won't take them seriously.
