Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Version 8 Documentation?

Can anyone tell me if documentation (PDF files and/or Printed books) will be available when V8 is released? I'm using V7 trial version without much time left. I have downloaded 14 pdf files that contain about 6000 pages of material. The online Help files might be great for some people, but I learn best from a book in front of me. So, will there be new manuals available with the release?

The best way is to use the Alpha Sports database example and the documentation of it and start thinkering.

If you need a book take a look at Peter Waynes book. But this is more a Xbasic centric book.

      Re: Version 8 Documentation?

A couple of years ago Alpha offered a "print on demand" of 4 volumes and around 2,500 pages of material. It covered through v5 or 6 and had extensive xdialog chapters. It contained everything there is to know. Unfortunately for me, there is too much to know so I no longer continue to hit my head with the same hammer over and over using Alpha. I read the forums once in a while hoping that the next upgrade might make A5 an easy from a programmer's point of view. My books are available if you want them.

In my opinion the best book ever was Learning Alpha Five: The Database for Everyone by Peter Wayne. The book was written for A5V4 (I think) and led the reader through the basics of developing an application from table design through forms, browses, letters, reports, sub-reports and so on. After finishing the book the reader could develop a fairly complex application using the tools provided while having developed a pretty good understanding of A5 and database design. His other book at the time, Alpha Five: Xbasic for Everyone, led the reader through Xbasic programming. His current book on Xbasic is excellent, but assumes a through knowledge of the basics of A5 has already acquired.

Currently you can get the book written by Susan Bush from the Alpha website. Like Dr. Wayne's first book, this leads the reader through learning in a structured format. Ms. Bush's first book is available for download chapter by chapter from the newsletters available in the newsletter archive. The archive is linked from the A5 website. It's on an earlier version but still provides the basics needed. While the online documentation is excellent for someone with a little A5 knowledge, it's difficult to learn the programs basics without a little structure. Having used Ms. Bush's first book (downloaded and printed chapter by chapter) as a desk reference, I believe it would provide the structure needed for the new A5 programmer.

There are three other books available from Alpha that look good but having not seen them I'll reserve comment. Perhaps someone else can give an opinion on them. I think they were developed by Pace Training.

You asked if new books would come out with v8, and I think no one here knows the answer. I'll ask the question during one of my conversations and post back what I get.
