Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Allow Edits

    I have a set OrdersbyCustomer:
Orders Linked one to many to Order Items and
Orders Linked One to one to Customers

When I enter a new record in Orders and after choosing a Customer, I want to be able to change or edit the Customer name, address, etc. in the same form. The only way it seems I am able to do this is to hit F3 while in the Customer fields. I've tried adding events such as Allow Edits when entering Cusomer Name, but doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Do you see the same behavior in the default form for your set? (not your custom form)

        Candy,

I will assume that Orders is the parent table in this set..correct? The Orders table has a field for a unique ID for each Order. The Orders table also contains an open field to hold the user-entered customer unique ID. This latter field is the link between the Orders table and Customers table.

Is this how you have it set up?

          Hi Mike-
Yes, that is exactly how I have it set up. The Orders table contains a field CustomerID. This field has a field rule to look up Customer. The customer is found and the CustomerID number from Customer is filled into the Orders Customer ID field.

          Thanks for any help.

Open your data entry form in design mode. Choose Form, then Properties, then select the Data Entry tab. How do you have "data entry style" configured?

Next, close the form. Then open it again. (not in design mode). Choose Form. Is "Allow Edits" checked or unchecked?

              Re: Allow Edits

Under design mode, the Data Entry Style is default. Default is Modeless. Yes, the Allow Edits is checked when I open the form (not in design mode).

How about posting a copy of the app so we can reduce the back and forth ? I used to really enjoy playing 20 questions but not so much any more.

Sure! What do you need to see exactly? Screen shots, I assume?

                    Candy,

I think what Tom was looking for was to open your database in A5 and use the Tools->Zip Database option. Then attach here so that he can see your actual A5 app. If your app has a lot of data, trim it down and send a small selection.

Nope. You included the ADB file only. It's meaningless here without the dictionaries, tables, sets, indexes.... the entire application.

                              Just a guess:
In the field rules, in the lookup tab: check "user can edit records in lookup table"
