Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Blank record added to Embeded Browse

    Hey All,

If i open a form that has an embedded browse (browse1), and the forms "onInit" i go to a new record in the browse, how do i protect against it saving a blank record if i move from the row, or if i close the form.

something onDepart on the embedded browse?

    Thanks much

just to clarify, this is the desired effect.

    1) form is opened
    2) Embedded browse is filtered (taken care of this already)
    3) Goto New record in browse
    4) if form is closed or row is changed without saving the record, cancel edit (or cancel new record, whatever)

    thanks much in advance

the "save" can be "cancelled" using the CanSaveRecord field rule event. Search message board for examples. the technique involves testing whether key fields in the current record are empty, if so the cancel() function is used to prevent the automatic save.

      Tom

correct me if i am wrong, but the CanSaveRecord is a tabel level record event no?

im not sure that will work for me as thie table in question is also used as a repository for appended records.

I am just trying to build a data entry form for it in case an edit needs to be made, or in case a record needs to be entered by hand.

I didnt see the CanSaveRecord event at the form/embedded browse level.

More to the point, if the table level field rule did work, what code do i use to prevent the blank record being entered and saved?

how do i reference the current record, or the last record edited?

A form has a cansave event...

        CanSave
Before the record is saved. Note that there is also a CanSaveRecord field rule event. However, if you cancel the CanSaveRecord event, the pending record is lost. If you cancel this event, the record is not saved, but the pending record is preserved, allowing the user to make necessary corrections
If you use that then the user is not allowed to leave the record, I believe.

        Discussion of events.
        There can be only one.

I don't recognize your terminology. It's a record event in field rules for the table, as mentioned in my first reply.

It's not clear to me that you've searched for related threads... there are many, this problem comes up fairly often.

To use this approach you decide which field or field must contain data before the new record is permitted to be saved. Let's assume you're talking about a Customer table, and that you've decided that the "Name" field must contain data and may not be blank in any record the user enters.

In the canSaveRecord event in field rules for the Customer table you could do this:

          Code:
t = table.current() 'get pointer to the Customer table
          if alltrim(t.name) = "" then
cancel() 'cancel the save because name field is empty
          end if
Test this with your append operations before deployment. I don't anticipate conflict.

Thanks tom, that seems to have done the trick.... and FYI, i did search, but perhaps my parameters were different, or i didnt make the connection to the examples.

Hey that's great. I'm glad you got it going. Were you able to confirm that your appends will not be affected? I'm curious if you tried to append a blank record? Did the field rule kick in to block it? -- tom

I made an operation, then converted it to a script that deletes all blank records that is set off when leaving my main form. It has been the best I found. I need certain pieces of information for a record to qualify as saveable, thus the need for deleting the bad ones.

                Just another way to go.
