Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() error?

    Can anyone debug the following error message for me?

    The function CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() is supposed to close any open form with the given name. However when I run it, A5 gives me an error saying the function is not recognized (see attached thumbnail). According to the documentation this function has been around since A5 version 5, I am using version 7, 4130-3033. This is the first time I have tried to use this function.

    I have the CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() code tied to the 'OnPush' event of the Close button on one form to make sure another related form is not inadvertently left open.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Brett,
    I just tried this function in my version 5 and came up with the exact same error...so believe it is one of those odd functions that either were not completed or deemed unnecessary.

      Re: CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() error?

      Hi Mike. This is a really useful function that I could use a lot if it worked. I cannot even imagine that it would be left in the documentation since version 5 for so long when it has never been present.

        Re: CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() error?

        How about this:

        Code:
        p = obj(":frmGDP")
        if (is_object(p)) then
            p.close()
        end if
        Marcel

        I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

          Brett,

          The function works just fine, just as long as you use the correct name, CloseIfExists(objectname). Unfortunately, it does not jive with the documentation, and hence your problem.

            Ira,

            Still the function is not recognized!

            Did you create a global function yourself in a library?

              Hi Marcel,

              OOPS! My faux pa! It was a function in my global library. :o

              The code was basically the same except it returned true or false if the window was present or not before closing.

              Sorry Brett.

                Re: CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() error?

                Thanks, guys. Looks like I will have to create my own UDF (guess what I will call it!) using Marcel's code, just passing the form name or maybe a form pointer. I had tried this previously and it didn't work, maybe because I left out the colon.

                    Bill---second that...I have not had any luck with that function either even though have several times seen it in threads touting it as a good function.

                      Re: CLOSE_IF_EXISTS() error?

                      Brett and all,

                      I was testing in Alpha sports (Since the help example had the familiar alphasports table names) and could not get this function to not work. Ie it always worked. Then rereading the threads by Ira and Marcel that they had similar functioning UDFs I checked the code page in Alphasports and lo and behold there is the offending udf. It seems like some created a help entry for a function that is included in Alphasports but that did not make into A5 itself.

                      And guess what this function consists of Marcel ........

                        Thanks, Tim. That looks pretty good. It's in my library already, with a couple of small mods (take out the "as N" in line 12, add "then" in line 23).

                          Hi all,

                          Taking from Tim's example of how the Close_If_Exists function was a UDF in Alpha I decided to see if the "close_all_windows" was one too....yep, you guessed it! It was! Here it is for those who have been stymied by this function as well.
