Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Design [Structure-Rules-Index] Exclusive Mode

I am getting frustrated with editing Structure, Field Rules, and Index.

I receive error messages too many times when attempting to modify any of the above. Error messages consist mainly of requiring exclusive mode.

The table/set is being used by another user or in another session and could not be opened in exclusive mode. Restructure can be viewed but no changes can be saved.

I am doing the work on a single computer with only one session of A5 that is not networked.

The only way I have been able to correct this problem temporarily is to do a pack or compact. I didn't delete any records so there should not be any need for packing. This is aggravating especially when I have to close the edit structure after getting the error message - pack the table - and then open edit structure so I can make the changes.

How do I correct this problem?

It is not with just isolated tables. It appears to happen with all tables. Sometimes more than others. The same in other databases.

Either you have a form open that is based on that table, or in a script you have opened the table and not closed it.

If a table is open, then Database Compact cannot get exclusive access either and will skip that table. So I do not know how that is solving your problem.

Closing A5 forces all the tables to release their locks. In some cases it could even require a reboot of your system to clear a lock.

Mostly this is a user problem of not closing the pointers to tables after opening the tables.

    Bill.

All tables were closed. All forms were closed. No scripts used.

I've even tried using the menu to File/Close instead of using the X Close on the form.

        Gary,

Just by closing a form does not necessarily mean you are closing either it or the table completely---they can still be in memory. I have had some success when this happens by opening a form , right clicking and choosing "Close All Windows". Many times though I have had to resort to just what Bill said and close Alpha and restart it....when I have really messed things up with code by leaving forms or tables "open" a reboot is what is called for. I was at the point you are not that long ago and now am very careful in scripting to make sure forms and tables are closed and have fixed a considerable amount of prior code so that now this issue is not as prevalent...but it still does happen. :-)

Also a good practice is to compact the database often if for no other reason as to let you know if a table is still open. This can also lead you to diagnosing what form is causing the offending table to stay open.

          Gary,

One method I often use to see if tables are still open is while the control panel has focus choose file from the main Alpha menu and then Database Information. Open tables will have a red yes in the 'open' column.

Since I am a trial and error type learner I make lots and lots and ....you get the idea ...of errors. I make great use of the function A5_ForceCloseTables(). In fact I have edited my control panel toolbar and added a button with that function attached. So if I have been experimenting with code I now make it a habit to press that button before using any of the edit features that may get locked out by an open table. I still check every nowand then as noted above or do a compact to make sure my processes are not leaving tables open.

            Tim,

About the A5_ForceCloseTables(). I have yet to have that function work--I get an "expected value" error if anything at all...does not close any tables for me. I am using version 5 but do believe it is listed as a function. Could this be yet another UDF ?

Edit: I just found that it is not supported in version 5. Do you know if I can find the equivalent in a UDF that someone has made?

I've found that editing a form by right clicking on it in the control panel and choosing edit will quite often result in tables being left open after you exit the edited form. However if I open the same form normally and then edit it the tables will close correctly.

I do use the a5_forceclosetables() a lot when in development because of this issue.

You should report this as a bug (v7: Help, Send a bug report).

                  Thanks

Now I just have to figure out how to modify the control panel toolbar to utilize that function

                    Gary,

You can use the function from the Interactive Window if you just want to try and see if it helps.

This link explains how to edit the toolbar.
