Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Send a report as ane-mail atachment (pdf)

    When I send a report as an email pdf attachment I do not get the option to rename the report. The reports always default to an A5 naming convention. As a result every report that I send to every email address/customer has the same name and this is a bit on the confusing side for the customer as when they save the report, it can overite the previous report. It would be nice if I could change the pdf report name to match the email subject line.
    Is there something that I am missing?

    Re: Send a report as ane-mail atachment (pdf)

    Not really BUT if you're willing to spend some development time you could ....

    - allow the user to preview the report for the sole purpose of verifying what's in it before deciding whether or not to e-mail it.
    - after closing the preview, ask whether or not to send the e-mail then, assuming the answer is 'yes', save the report as whatever name you have chosen and open a new e-mail letter with it attached.

    Here's a code snippet from one of my scripts that should get you going. Of course, you will have to modifiy the table pointers and set the variables as needed to match your own situation.

    Code:
    DIM datapath as C
    IF a5.Get_Master_Path() = ""
     datapath = a5.Get_Path() + chr(92)
    ELSE
     datapath = a5.Get_Master_Path() + chr(92)
    END IF
    report.preview( rpt_name, filter, order )
    msg = "Is this report OK to send to " + tp.custnamef + "?"
    mresp = ui_msg_box( "OK TO SEND?", msg, 32 + ui_yes_no )
    IF mresp = ui_yes_selected
       pdf_filename = datapath + "Reports\Post_Activity_" + cdate( date() ) + ".pdf"
       report.saveas( rpt_name, "PDF", filter, order, pdf_filename )
       xbasic_wait_for_idle()
       email_client( em_addr, subj_text, body_text, pdf_filename, "", "", .T. )
    END IF
    I don't know if the xbasic_wait_for_idle() is needed anymore. This script was originally created in an earlier version.

    Other comments:
    1. I use a standard naming convention in that script. You could also prompt the user for a name if you so desired.
    2. Note that "em_addr" is the e-mail address you want to send this to. Although it's not included in the script above, I simply pull that from the current client record so I don't have to look it up and type it in manually.

      I am assuming the sequence you follow is to preview the report then send by email. When you do that, alpha creates the report, saves it in the temp files and then email it. Hence the rigid names.

      Alternatively, save your report (or archive it) to whichever name you want, then email it.

      You could do that with xbasic as well.
