Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Multiple Updates to the Same Field

    To: Mike W.

Am somewhat embarassed to acknowledge my lack of ability in downloading your
m2mzip file. I thought I had it downloaded correctly, but when I later tried to activate the button on form and see what action/s transpired, it failed to work. When I tried to (review the actions) of the button in design mode, there weren"t any defined actions in my downloaded copy.
I am sure I did something wrong and have tried unsuccessfully for two weeks to get a proper download. Consequently, I am still lost at sea on updating in one pass three separate fields in my BOM table.

Is it possible you could define the actions for that button in a text message? Sorry to keep asking for help.

    Regards, John Linley

I also tried to open Mike's zip file in version 7 - but to no avail - the main form opens but when you push the button, the second form opens but all the browses are blacked out and there are some distortions on the right hand side of the form. If you go into design mode, the component change button only shows as an outline as to where it is - if you try to look at the onpush event for that button, my computer hangs. I have to use the task manager to get out of alpha.

I then used version 8 and it opened fine - everything was there and all the buttons worked as they should.

Mike may have created the app in version 8 or possibly version 9 and there is some incompatibility in the form that Mike references. Just a guess on my part -

        John,
Tom is correct. I must have mistakenly opened, tested and zipped the example in v9 before posting. Sorry. I re-configured it with v7 and zipped it here for you. Hope this helps, and sorry for the confusion.

I do have version 9. I forgot to mention it before.

Should I try to open v7zip or the previous zip that I was unable to open successfully?
I feel a little better sinc TBAKER also had problems opening it.

          Thank you Mr. Baker !!

          Regards to both of you,

          John L

Today, I created an operation and an xdialog that updates the source, in the table BOM. The first prompt is which part nbr to update, and the second prompt is "enter new source". It works fine, and I guess I can do the same for updating the casting labor and then the cost. It is clumsy, and I would like to be able to globally update one, two or three fields in the table BOM in one pass instead of three.
Also, please add an 'e' to the word 'sinc'.
After two editings, I still didn't notice it.

          Regards again.

            John,
If you have v9, then as Tom wrote that he was able to open in v8 and all was well, v9 will open it fine, either example. What you describe should be very doable, and to some degree is done in the example.
