Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • "Error 1" reports will not archive

I keep getting an "error 1" message when trying to archive a report for any of the four options. It is occurring on two different installations and any databases I have created. Any ideas?

A search for "error 1", with the quotes, tells me that the error ususally means that Alpha cannot find a referenced file.
    There can be only one.

I found that also when searching threads, help index for codes etc. but I am baffled why it is the same on two installations, all databases. So far any searching or references doesn't give me any direction for what files cannot be found by A5

        Hi Larry,

What is the code you are using when trying to archive a report?

          Re: code for archiving

I use the button tools for easy adding but the problem is occuring in every instance. Even when going to the reports tab on the control panel to open a report, the menu options for archiving any type do not work.
I guess I may try a new install but still wondering how it occurred in two installations, two locations on the same day?

            Hi Larry,

Maybe it is the patch you used on those installs?

on the workstations that are having trouble use the "details" view of the control panel to inspect the physical path definition Alpha is using for your tables and sets.

From control panel, right click white space
Choose View from the right click menu
choose Details from drop down list
              Select Tables / Sets tab

Inspect "Full name" for the table or set supporting your report. It's likely that what you see is different from the actual physical path to the table or set. Hence, Alpha can't find your tables to run the report.

Background: The simplest way to avoid pathing issues in an Alpha Five database is to physically store the tables and sets in the same folder as the database dictionary file (the "ADB" file) itself. Not a subfolder. Not a different folder. Not a different drive. The same folder.

                Re: Physical path - patches

                I have V7, Build 4130, Addins build 3033.
I viewed the physical paths and they are the same as always and all files are in the same directory (I learned that lesson a few months ago) :-)
I also just discovered that not only is the .pdf (or other methods) archive not functioning, it deletes the old archive file.
