Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AEX Default Setting

If an AEX file is created in the code tab and located in the working database folder, will it auto-load if a yes/no setting has never been established in view/settings/preferences?

    Re: AEX Default Setting

Well, I did some subsequent testing, and I think the default setting is "no". Here is why I asked for input on this: I was grasping at straws trying to figure out why my customer's application was recently very slow. I found that an old .aex file was on their server, and I wondered if A5 was auto-loading obsolete scripts. Since I had never explicitly set the view/settings/preference, the setting appeared as blank. In any event, I have returned some speed to the application by cleaning up some code, etc.

I didn't reply to this earlier because I'm not sure what the answer is but I'd guess it was 'Yes'. First, since A5 says this will happen, I would think it would be the default. Second, I only used an aex with the same name as the database in one application back in v7 and it worked fine. I checked just now and the setting is blank but it has been a year or two since I tried it and it's possible that I've re-installed v7 since then so I can't be certain.

However, I doubt that loading an old file would slow down anything. It might add a few milliseconds to the initial loading of A5 but that's about all. I manually loaded an aex file with about 20 fairly long functions (about 6000 lines of code) just now using the load_library() function and the profiler showed a time of 0.00102 seconds. If your users can detect that, they are really good!

      From the trace window:
      Code:
      Script TEMPLATE
      Line Tot Time Cnt Source
      ========================================================
         2 0.001021 1 load_library( "E:\A5v8\_A5v8_Std\Reg_Term_Server\aims_tsreg_client.aex" )

Cal, Thank you for the reply. So, it seems I have no real idea of what happens when an auto-load occurs. I thought that whatever scripts were in the .aex file would over-ride those with the same name currently residing in the code tab, and might cause problems if the scripts had subsequently been revised.

I just tested it. If you make changes in the db scripts/functions, they control, not the aex. If you then delete the db scripts/functions, exit A5 and reload the db, then the aex kicks back in. For whatever reason the aex w. the same name as the db in the db's folder does not display in the addin manager dialog boxes.

            Re: AEX Default Setting

Actually, based on my testing, it's the other way around. Scripts/functions by the same name in the Code tab will take priority over the ones in the aex file.

The point of using an aex file with the same name as the application is so that nobody else can read the code. So, the "general assumption" is that there will be no code in the Code tab - it will all have been removed. (That's one of the problems with using aex files for this purpose but there are solutions). Therefore, it's logical to assume that anything added back into the Code tab would be newer than what is in the aex file and should be used instead of what's in the aex.

Another way to look at it is: Whatever the developer writes should take priority so we will first check the Code tab then check the addin (aex) files.

Edit: I've got to learn - after getting on a long phone call, check to see if someone else has already supplied the answer before finishing my reply.
