Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HALP with reports

I am struggling to learn A5v7 (from A4v8). I have created a database to keep stats for a girls' high school basketball team I coach.

I keep track of such thing as Field Goal Attempts, Points, Rebounds, Steals, Assists and Percent from Foul Line (Number made divided by number of attempts. I have this calculated field ok.)

I want to keep the stats for each game, and a running total in the format shown in the attachment.

    Specifically:

I want the report name to repeat at the top of each page, but I can't make it do that.

I want the column headers to repeat at the top of each page, but I can't make it do that.

I want the Date, Opponent and stats to print for each record, but I can't make it do that.

I can't get a running total of each stat for each player.

I do not want orphans or widows. If an entire record does not fit on a page, I want it to skip to the next page.

I had this report built once and it worked fine. Then, somehow, I lost it and cannot figure out how to rebuild it GRRRR! I can get it all just fine with A4v8!

I think I need to add a summary section somewhere, but I just can't get it to work after a week trying.

Please. Any help on what I believe is a very simple problem, would be so appreciated. (Good thing I know more about coaching than I do about computing.

    Thanks very much.

    Bill,
I want the report name to repeat at the top of each page, but I can't make it do that.

I want the column headers to repeat at the top of each page, but I can't make it do that.
Create a Page Header and place the needed fields on it to do this.

I want the Date, Opponent and stats to print for each record, but I can't make it do that.
This sounds like fields to be placed into the detail band--but could be something else and without either a sample, a screenshot of what you need, or a better more specific description, I am not certain.

I can't get a running total of each stat for each player.
There is a function for running total....but a running total does not seem to fit what you describe...seems like a grouping on the player field and then maybe a total in the group footer???

I do not want orphans or widows. If an entire record does not fit on a page, I want it to skip to the next page.
There are such settings for the bands....right click on a band heading and check out the properties to find what you need. My worry always with this setting is what happens if the record is larger than a full page...hmmm..should experiment sometime to see what happens I guess! :)

Summary section.....if you mean a total of whatever based on whatever, then drag the wanted field to a footer (create the footer if the correct one is not present) and let the genie do the work for you!

Mikie, *Thank you* for your reply. I tried desperately, three times, to upload a JPG image of a sample report. It appeared to be uploading it, but it never did. <Bill shrugs> I think it would have answered your questions.

          Hi Bill,
Seems like you have accomplished most of it now---do you still have a problem getting the totals of each field? If so, and if the TOTALS: row is a footer for each of the Name groups, then just drag each field you want totaled from the drag-drop list into the footer and choose total from the dialog box that comes up.

With your great assistance, yeah. Pretty much done. Only one thing ....

I would like it to print the last name only once. A4v8 had a V or U command in the report writer that took care of that.

But in A5, I haven't been able to find that or anything similar (and God knows, I've hunted and clicked just about everything).

That option may appear on the print command, but I have not noticed it.

              Bill,
More than one way to do such things.

How about creating a Header for your grouping and placing the last name field in it.

Another way for a different circumstance would be to create a calculated field to use on the report with something along the lines of:
              blank_duplicate("yourNamefield",grouped over your grouping field)

I think just a single grouping parameter would suffice, but right click on the function's argument to choose a grouping and experiment around with it.
