Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Simple Mask

    Hi All,

    I have build 4130-3033.

When I select Simple Mask the layout is greyed out. Is this an old bug?

If it is an old bug then at least I'll know that.

If I select Conditional then I have choices, so I know that part works.

Hey Keith, do you mean to be in the V9 area? Old or new bug for v7 won't matter.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

      Yes I do mean V7.

It is an old app that I need to update because of the new VAT rates.

I was hoping to use the mask , but it looks like I cant. This should be so basic and should not be a bug.

        Re: Simple Mask

Keith, please explain the problem in more detail. For instance, are you having a problem defining the field rule, or is the field rule misbehaving when the form is displayed?

          Hi Tom,

How goes it? Please see thumbnail of screen shot from Field Rules.

I would like to create a very simple Mask. As you can see area in red box is greyed out.

          Any suggestions?

I do not see the same thing with AlphaSports, working with the Bill_Address field (for example) in Customer table. Are you certain the field is "user entered"? Might it be a calc field instead?

              Keith

I see the same thing - running the same build as you in Version 7.

If you have a character field no problem. If it is numeric, the simple mask is greyed out and only the conditional works to a degree on numeric. It is the same way in Version 8 - I don't know about version 9.

If you use the conditional mask and enter a mask in the first row say 00.00 then the condition recno()< a large number - the mask will prevent you from entering more than what the mask allows but it does not hold anything but the decimal point.

Character fields work fine in both 7 and 8.

Just what I'm seeing (very rarely use masks so it doesn't bother me)

              FWIW

I've always believed that masks should ONLY work with character data. Call me crazy.

                  OK, I get it now.

You can set a character field to have a mask to accept numbers, but you cant set a mask on a numeric field to accept numbers.

I guess I'll have to live with that.

                  Thanks guys.
