Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: Lost Database

Importing a file can't cause you to lose anything, at least not "everything". Are the files present in the project folder?

        Re: Lost Database

        Hi Mike:

I mean everything within the Database. I had several tables/sets, various forms, numerouse operations. I can open the databased but it's like a "new" database, everhthing is blank.
Normally, I import an excel file into one of the tables (using the Genie), perform some update operations on the table, then append it to a Master table. During or after the append operation, there were everything went blank....no tables, no forms, no operations and etc.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm pretty much a layman in this area
        Thanks for you help

          I have asimilar problem.
I am running an old version of Alpha5 from 1995.
I just lost the DBF file, but still have the files for the related Index and Forms.
          Any suggestion?

            Jim:

This was way over my head. Tried Alpha support and they were no help. Had a friend that found the files and we were able to restore. He said something about the headers being corrupted and program could not find the files.
I'm sure this is not help but my files were still on the drive but the program could not find them.

                Re: Lost Database

Jim, how did you lose the database? I mean, what caused it? You should be able to find the .adb file somewhere on your computer unless you accidently erased it. Look in your recycle bin.

                  Re: Lost Database

Thanks for a reply Robert. Remember I have an old version of Alpha. Alpha 5 ver 1.1 from 1996. I don't think this early version yet used ADB as an extension. It still used DBF.
In answer to you question. . . I was doing a Save As to save the file to a Thumb Drive. Don't know what happened, I went to the Thumb Drive to see if everything was OK and there was no DBF file. There were 3 related files which I think have to do with Indexing, Browse and Report forms.

                    Re: Lost Database

what are the extensions of the three files you found? Also, did you do a search for the file name (without the extension) on the thumb drive and your hard drive?

                      Re: Lost Database

The other extensions which were on the Flash Drive were; .DDD; .DDM; .DDX; .MDX

                        Re: Lost Database

Well, they're useless without the .dbf. Did you search the flash drive or your harddrive with just the name, no extension, as I previously mentioned? Make sure you search on hidden files, folders, not indexed files in advanced search. Also check your recycle bin.

I've had friends over and we've done about everything.
My wife and I just started re-entering all the data.
We have spent way too much time on this loss.
I guess I might also look into upgrading if I am going to keep Alpa.
Thanks for your time and help.

                            Re: Lost Database

I just recently had an issue where all tables and forms, etc were missing from the control panel. I copied the dictionary files back into the active folder from a backup and all was fixed. The files were still on the hard disk. The pointers just got messed up some how.

I don't understand how a "copy" operation could have lost your files. When you do a copy the original file stays in place. So, maybe you accidentally tried to "move" the file?

At any rate, make sure you back up your database folder. Especially if you are not a computer expert. A simple backup made every day will save you a lot of grief. And A5 makes it easy. It's built in to the menus. Your friends should be able to find the backups made by Alpha and get you back up.
