Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Another Question about Error 30, Printer Not Activated

I have read the previous threads that I could find about this issue.

    Somehow this problem is growing.

When I try to do "save as" to a .rtf file or to a .txt file I get "Error 30 - Printer Not Activated."

I have set the default printer for the report to my physical printer. I can go in and reset the printer from alpha five printer to my physical printer from within the report and still get the error.

I have been able to work around this before, but suddenly I cannot. I simply cannot save the file.

Any help will be appreciated. I am nearly ready to search for a new database program, and I'd hate to go to the effort of redoing everything.

The printer for any activity should never be "Alpha Five Printer". This driver will not accept input like other print drivers. It is only there so Alpha can direct output to it internally.

IOW you don't print to "Alpha Five Printer". You use the other options instead of printing.

(not entirely sure you aren't trying the right way but your post didn't sound like you are)
    There can be only one.

I'm using version 8 and tried both types of files successfully to save a report. Do you have the little box checked that says "Open file with associated application". Do you have a path specified for the file?

        Thanks for the reply, Stan.

I keep re-setting the printer to my physical printer (HP Deskjet), but the program keeps re-setting it back to Alpha Five Printer. There is nothing I can do to stop this.

To be specific, if I go into printer setup, I notice the program is set for the HP. Then when I try to print to file, or save to file, the program says, "Billing form to alpha five printer." Then 'Pinter not activated, error code -30"

In the past, I could re-set the printer to the HP and it would work. No more.

          Hi, Robert,
I'm using version 7. I have tried it both ways with "open file with associated application checked and unchecked. And yes, there is a path specified.

When you go to the printer tab in report properties, the "use default printer" should be checked. If so, and it's trying to print to the a5 printer, I would go into the printer settings in the control panel and make sure your hp is selected as the default printer.

I noticed that if you check " use specified printer" and go down through the printer list, the a5 printer is on com1. that would be a serial port which most printers don't use anymore. I went to the printer settings in the control panel and that is the way it is specified on my Vista machine. If I select (checkmark) the A5 printer and then right click on it and select printing preferences, I get the same error message you have but when I click on ok in the error message, the A5 printer settings come up. If I go to properties from the same menu and click on printing preferences in the general tab, I also get the same behavior. Therefore, you need to figure out how to keep A5 from going to the A5 printer which is for converting PDF documents. Is there anything "PDFish" (new word) about your report?

Well, Robert, you're on to something here. I worked -- partly.

If I set the report properties to "Default Printer" it works if I start out with "Save to File" checked.

If, however, I preview the report and then try to save to file, even if I set the printer to "HP etc." I still get it trying to print to alpha five printer and giving me the same old error code.

But at least there is a way.

By any chance are you selecting the "print" button from the report preview? If you select file\save as, there is no option to select a printer.

                  Was this ever completely resolved?
