Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help - Calculated Field Total is wrong

    THESE ARE CALCULATED FIELDS IN A REPORT THAT I AM TRYING TO DESIGN

    PAGENO = PAGENO()
    DATE = LTRIM(STR(DAY(DATE())))+"-"+CMONTH(DATE())+"-"+CYEAR(DATE())
    tot = total(Booked+Oversubscribed,GRP->detail)
    subtot = total(calc->Tot,GRP->coursecode)
    tot_calc_subtot_for_coursecode = run_total(Calc->Subtot,GRP->coursecode)
    grandtot = total(calc->Subtot,GRP->Grand)
    Fee = first(Coursefee)
    Acctot = calc->Fee*calc->Subtot
    fees = calc->Acctot
    totalfees = total(calc->Fees,GRP->Grand)

    I am designing a report for a table, the report is grouped by a field called coursecode and each time the group changes the group section of the report has calculated fields of the number of bookings multiplied by the fee for that particular group to get the total revenue. This part of the report works fine.

    I then want to put in the report footer a grand total field which adds up the totals for each group, there is value in the totalfees field but it is wrong. I thought the problem may have been that I was asking it to total up a field which had a calculation in it (Acctot), so I created another summary field which I called fees, I went on to put a field in the footer called totalfees but the value of it is the same wrong value as when I ask it to calculate the grand total of the field called Acctot.

    I hope you can make sense of what I'm trying to explain, I am keen to do this as I had the same problem when I used Alpha4 and I'd like to impress my boss;)

    A sample of your database, including dummy data, would help us help you more quickly.

      Hi,

      I have attached a zip file of the table. Thanks. Sorry I neglected to say the report is called Weekly Scores

        Judith

        Replace the calculated field for the total fees with this:

        totalfees = total(calc->Acctot,grp->Grand,grp->Coursecode)

        I think that should fix it.

          Judith, it seems to me that your approach involves nesting calculated fields. i.e. including calc fields in the expressions used to define later calc fields.

          I prefer not to do it that way.

          Here's an example illustrating what I think is a simpler approach. The two calc fields I've added to your layout are highlighted in yellow.

          Note:
          a) To work with the report layout here I pointed it to the default printer.

          b) I get different group totals than you for CourseCode groups:
          IFRA
          RCS
          UAIF
          VAT

          This means either your existing group total expression is returning the wrong result, or I don't understand your data, which is very possible.

          Hope this helps.

            Thank you for your help, Glen your suggestion has worked fine. We have used this report in Alpha4 for years and never had that final total field so this is a great improvement.

            Tom I am going to look at your zip file now, thank you for your help I will look at my totals again, although I did think they were correct.

              Re: Help - Calculated Field Total is wrong

              Judith, what you'll see is that the CourseFee varies within the CourseGroups I specified. Your formula uses the "first" coursefee for the group. Mine uses the actual CourseFee assigned to each Course record. If the fees within a group did not vary my approach and yours would arrive at the same number.

                Thanks Tom, the course fee is the same for each record in the group.
