Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: How do I make my auto-increment field bigger?

    Mike,
    See attached. I tried to show there is a "Rga_number" field, the program is calling out the right table and the error. I am a little confused because I see the everything that needs to be there is there.

    In addition I have to reduplicate the filed every time because the pgm starts to change the table.

    Have you heard of Liberty Manuals and if so are they any good?
    http://www.libertymanuals.com/downlo...on-10-1-2.html

    This company is purchasing the all in one bundle from Alpha software so I guess we are in it for the long haul. I'd like to get good at pgming Alpha so do you have any recommendations, books, cd or dvd?

    I used the debug() command, see second attachment.

    Code:
    .....
    dim t as p
    t=table.open("reworked_rgastart_dbf")
    .....
    Is that what you have? Also, my code mistakenly has the first letters being changed to RMA instead of RGA. You might want the correct that.

      Re: How do I make my auto-increment field bigger?

      Dan,
      Sorry, my bad. I read the error message wrong. This is what happens when I can't test it. The pointer to the field is not there so it is seeing it as a variable. Add the pointers:

      Code:
             if "RGA" $ t.Rga_number
      	  t.rga_number="RMA-"+padl(alltrim(str(val(right(alltrim([B][COLOR="Red"][SIZE="4"]t.[/SIZE][/COLOR][/B]Rga_number),4))+1)),16,"0")
             else
      	  t.rga_number="RMA-"+padl(alltrim(str(val(right(alltrim([COLOR="red"][B][SIZE="4"]t.[/SIZE][/B][/COLOR]Rga_number),4))+1001)),16,"0")
              end if

        Re: How do I make my auto-increment field bigger?

        Thanks, One of my weaknesses are pointers. So next I have to rename the file back to "rgastart"? Then when adding a record in the program, the auto increment should pickup at the end of the table, is this correct? I am going to try this but I thought I would get your thoughts.

        Is there a way of adding memory besides closing and opening the program?

        It did not work, I am still getting RGA-9999 to RGB-0001...

        I tried removing the "-" so "RGA" but it did not change anything.
        At least there are no error messages. I trying to follow the line code to see what it is exactly doing.

        I cant find the "$" as a special character, what does it do in this code: if "RGA" $ t.Rga_number?

          Take a peek at the top function on this online help page....If you ever want to find a function here is a small tip....Using the Index of the online help,if needed for character type in character and then scroll down to functions.....do the same for mathematical, date, time, list......

            if you have RGA-9999 to start with, after running the code I have given you, then you are clearly doing something wrong. Because the code should turn all the rga_numbers to be 20 characters padded with zeros.

            I'm going to make up an example and post it.

              Re: How do I make my auto-increment field bigger?

              OK Here is the sample.
              There are no field rules on the table.
              first run the setup script and see the table.
              then run the convert script and see the table.

              The convert script in this sample works, the other one I posted is off a bit.

                Thanks Mike, I have been using Alphapedia and am still learning how to use its resources. I will review the site you suggested because I am looking for a reference book that I can look up commands under a given category.

                  Mike,
                  I finally had time to run the program. I think it will work because we do not have that many record. When I brought the actual file into the returns pgm, I want to browse first and an error message said "Unable to find or open memo file".
                  How do I browse the actual file before run the rga_convert script? I will need to compare line by line before I put it back into the original rgastart program and add new records to see if it picks up after the last converter rga number before I return it back to the warranty department, dry run test. Where do I go from here?
                  PS. I have looked up most of the functions and now know what they do, just have to get use to Alpha.

                    Mike,
                    I exported rga_convert script from "return" and imported it into "rgastart" and ran it as a script. Also I copied the script and pasted it into an interactive window, highlited it and ran the script. In either case "rgastart.dbf" was not changed. In both cases it ran for several minutes but "rgastart.dbf" was not altered. I think I'll try to export and import "rgastart.dbf" into "return" to see if that will work.

                      I copied rgastart.dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx and fpt into the returns directory and executed the rga_convert. An error appeared "record number is past end of table" at line 9 (tcount=). I'll try to debug and I attached a small jpg file rgastart fyi.
