Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

It takes you to a page showing the posts that are below the current level in the tree.

Personally, I've always hated the tree view and have always found it extremely difficult to quickly find the latest posts. While I have set the default to use hybrid mode, I personally prefer linear. Especially with the quote features, it is much easier to view the posts you haven't yet read by skipping to the last page in a thread than trying to infer it from a tree.

That's what I thought, however, I have tried it on several occassions and the message that comes up does not appear to be the next message in view. Maybe it is something I have to get used to. I just tried the Linear mode and I like that much better.

        Thanks

Sandy, check out the "Quote" feature. That way you won't have to manually copy and paste pieces of someone's post and put >> << around it. I edited your post to show you what I mean....

But I don't quite get it. Linear is just a page of messages, flush left, in chronological order.

Err, umm, yupp. I've seen the quote feature. Choices are good. Okay, so my choice is better than yours, but chocolate beats vanilla, too.

Messages were not editable; people took time to proof what they wrote.
I could see threads with new messages easily.
Search got old posts quite well.
Sandy, if you go into the User CP and then click on Edit Options, you can set your preferences to not show images and avatars. I don't think there is a way to turn of colors and other formatting, but these add a negligible amount of download time, even on a slow connection.

                Thanks, I'm trying that now.

Looks good! Editing messages is a new experience, too.

Now that's interesting. If you edit a message that uses chevrons instead of the quote button, the chevrons get interpreted as a quote and the original ends up in the blue penalty box. It's an HTML conspiracy!

Nope, that's just me following you around changing your >>'s to quotes, which offer several advantages in terms of readibility. They also require less work, since you can just hit the "quote" button rather than the "Post Reply" button when replying to a post and it is all automatically copied into a quote tag.

I must be getting old - I was so familiar with the old board. :( However, that was better than the earlier board, and I will get familiar with this one too. ;)

Definitely go ahead and switch all forums. :p

We've already migrated A5v6, most of a5v5 (the import is running as I type), D2TW, and Announcements! I'm not sure if we'll ever migrate A5v1 - a5v3, but most of the rest will follow over the course of the week.

that too. But when I edit my own message, the blue penalty box appears immediately. Like right away.

                              Avatar

Simple definition - an avatar is a graphic (drawing, cartoon character, etc.) that represents you.

Women and cats will do whatever they want. The sooner men and dogs realize that, the happier they will be.
