Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't access browse properties

    Hi,

I cannot access browse properties to set alternating row colors... I'm running Vista Business.. This USED to work, until I removed Alpha V7... please see image below...

I've done a system restore after removing Alpha v7, have re-installed V8, and still have the problem. Browse's now do not show alternating row colors, nor can I SET these colors... I am **VERY** frustrated over this... I don't know what else to do, short of re-installing the entire operating system. Selwyn... PLEASE HELP!!!

    Re: Can't access browse properties

Am I losing it?? I seem only to be able to access alternating row colors, etc. and the entire BROWSE PROPERTIES menu selection ONLY when the browse is embedded in a form... is that the correct behavior? Can someone confirm this before I decide I've lost my sanity? I had some system changes, and now when I try to change row colors on a REGULAR, non-embedded browse, I don't have access to the BROWSE PROPERTIES menu (see previous post). A sanity check from someone would be most helpful... thanks!

I tried it on Alpha Sports using default Customer browse table. Worked fine in Windows XP.

        Re: Can't access browse properties

Update: I've set the shortcut to run Alpha as Administrator, and I can now access the things I mentioned before that I couldn't... however, this was NOT the case originally... I was originally able to run this as a regular user...

ALPHA: Any idea what's going on? I'll detail what I did that seemed to screw this up -- if you have any suggestions on how to get me back to normal I would appreciate it.

I wanted to get rid of A5V7 off my machine (I'm running Vista Business, and due to the fact that it's not supposed to run reliably on this platform, I wanted to remove it).

Trying to remove using "Programs and Features" in control panel didn't work - I was getting an error "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file".

Based on a posting another user made after making a request as to how I could remove it (which I can no longer find - did someone remove it??) I manually removed the program folder for A5V7, and two registry keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER->SOFTWARE->ALPHA Five 7.0 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->ALPHA Five 7.0

This is when I noticed the strange behavior of V8. I tried a re-install (as administrator) with no positive results.

At this Point I did a system restore from the previous day when it WAS working. This had no positive effect.

I did an uninstall and re-install. No positive result. I did notice, however, that the problems I mentioned seemed to go away if I ran as Administrator. They continued if I ran as a regular user.

I changed the shortcut to run as administrator, and the problems seemed to have gone away (with one exception: I THOUGHT that if I opened a table in a default browse, it automatically altered line colors as white and blue when it was opened -- this no longer happens; all rows are white, columns are white, and everything is in black text).

I believe that summarizes things... I can use the program, but now I do so without complete confidence (and don't like the fact that Vista is giving me the "Ok to Run?" message every time I launch Alpha.

Again, if you have any ideas as to what I can do to get this working properly I would appreciate it. Do you have a tool that cleans ALL registry entries to do a clean re-install?

        Thanks...

            Re: Can't access browse properties

Hi Al, thanks for the interest in my pleas for help...

It seems to be working now, except for the fact that after the install (done as administrator), it set itself up to run as administrator for all users... I didn't think this was required (at least that's what they said during the pre-release), so I have to deal with the annoying "Ok to run?" dialog (BTW -- Love the new apple commercial that spoofs this)

Here's what I had to do:

            - Removed all Alpha V8 icons from all login's (desktop shortcuts, etc).
            - Ran uninstall from "Programs and Features"
            - Removed entries from the registry (both "LOCAL_USER\Software\Alpha Software v8" for my login, and any other logins that were using Alpha)
            - Removed entry from registry "LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Alpha Software v8"
            - Removed the Alpha program directory from "Program Files"
            - Removed \Users\{user}\roaming\appdata\Alpha Software for all logins

Then, I re-ran the installation AS ADMIN. Logged in as myself, double-clicked on the icon that had been added, and (after saying "Yes Please" to the Vista overlord), it ran and everything seems to be where it should.

I guess after this whole excercise, my only question now is, why won't it run properly without Admin rights? If I remove the "Run as Admin" option, it DOES run, but then I can't access things like I mentioned in previous posts.

As I said before, this isn't boosting my confidence level any for either Vista, or for Apha V8 running on it....

Oh well... at least I can continue the project I was working on!

Where is your database located, physically, on the hard drive? Is it in a system folder, such as Program Files? Does your user have access to it?

                Shawn:
While this is not responsive to your question, but as you noted you have several troubles with v8 & Vista.

I don't think it's a wise idea to use two newly introduced programs at the same time. It makes it hard to figure out where the culprit is, whether it's Vista or v8.

I suggest you stick with XP until you feel confortable with v8 and then move to Vista.

As you might have noticed, not too many people are using Vista as of yet, at least from what I see in this board.

                I won't, not for a good while.

                  Re: Can't access browse properties

Aaron: The database is in my own documents folder right now. My login belongs to the administrators group.

Gabriel: I agree, to a point -- I work as a computer consultant for an accounting firm; Computer support is my first role, database development is just an offshoot from that (i.e. sometimes I come across a client who would benefit from switching from recording stuff on paper to doing it in a database; when I do, I try to come up with something for them). I use V8 on both XP AND Vista -- I have to learn Vista mainly because at some point I have to support it -- it's been my experience that hands on has always been the best way to learn. The current project I'm working on I carry with me and do some work at the office with XP, and at night at home with Vista. If anything else, it's a good test of Alpha to see if it really IS 100% compatible with both... thanks for your interest; It's nice to see someone is listening!
