Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Linking 3 computers in SAME office

What do I have to do to link together 3 computers in the SAME office? Using common data! What version of Alpha 5? What other hardware is necessary?

    Don,

    Very complex questions.

    Alpha5v7 or v8 is available.
older versions are available also that will run networked(not sure you can still get them from alpha).

You will need the runtime version, maybe a 3 user setup.

You need to a good local area network - faster is better

3 good fast computers with lots of memory.

windows 2000 or above for version 7 and 8

I did not give you specifics on memory and speed, but your pocketbook will determine that.

      Thanks Dave,

Sorry for delay in answering you but i was away over the weekend. I think what you told me is enuf to convince the User that they might want to seek other avenues - such as using ONE of the computers to store A5 and then PRINT reports for use by the other two people.

        Don,

I take it they don't want to speed it all up because of money.

The runtime is not that expensive and most computers have 2000 or xp on them. They mostly have adequate memory to run the program(maybe not as fast). A basic network(peer to peer) cant be that much money either. If a few bucks to make things more productive is not there, then it is just not there.

        What are they using now?

I have gone into small car lots with software they had to have and found them with 8 year old computers that they brought from home. They used the wisdom of getting a new one for home so the kids could play and bring the old one to work that had to be productive.

I do so hope you luck with your endeavor.

Don, if it's the network part that scares you, one can be set up very inexpensively. All you need is a 5 (or so) port switch, which can be had for about $15-$20 and a few ethernet cables which are a few $each on line. then plug them all in. If they are newer computers they will have an ethernet port, if not, ethernet cards are available for around $10 each. Then once linked one computer can put a share on a directory or partition. Put the Alpha data on the shared directory and they will all be able to see it.
This assumes that you will be able to set up Alpha to work like this, but the directions for sharing are pretty good. (and you have the message board.)
Networks don't have to be expensive, and it will pay for itself very quickly.
