Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Five version 8 freezing

Since I installed the most recent patch yesterday the application freezes and has to be closed using Windows Task Manager. Sometimes it freezes as soon as it has opened but sometimes I can open a database before it freezes. All other programs are fine.

I have noticed that when it has frozen the Kaspersky Internet Security toolbar icon flashes and the CPU usage is at 100%. I have scanned for viruses and there are none. I have also run Spybot and Ad-Adaware and removed all undesirables.

    Any ideas from anyone?

    Hi Peter,

If you reinstall the previous version is all well?

I haven't tried that yet. Would I have to uninstall alpha five first? Then, would I have trouble reactivating?

Stupidly, I installed the previous patch directly and did not save it to disc.
Anything else I can try. Still freezes every time I open it.

            Peter,

It's a good idea to make a folder called A5V8 patches or similar and keep all patches in there (I usually rename patches to reflect the complete patch number). As Martin said, you won't ever hurt anything by installing a patch over a newer or older patch. I don't have any of the recent patches, I'm still running 3068-1391, but hopefully someone will email it to you shortly.

I am using 3081 with no problems
although I got it several days ago, and sometimes they will make changes in the current prelininary patch without updating the number

Just for interest how do the patches get their build numbers?

I can't fathom the logic in the numbering.....

Re: Alpha Five version 8 freezing

There are two numbers in the full build number. The first is the actual core build number and is sequential. Each new build is 1 number greater than the previous. More than one build could be made in a day for internal testing purposes. When a release version is created, it uses the internal build number of that version. Therefore the release number may seem to "skip" a lot of numbers. In addition, each version (a5v6, a5v7, a5v8), has their own sequence, so theoretically there could be a A5V5 build with the same "build" number as one in A5V8. The current release build in A5V8 is 1552.

The second number is the addins build number, which is currently 3080. Addins consist of mainly the various functions available in the program. More than one build may use the same addin build number. The complete "build" number is actually the combination of the two. Therefore the identification of the last release build for A5V8 would correctly be identified as:

                    Alpha Five V8, build 1552-3080.

I am still in real trouble.

I have gone back to build 1269 3059 and it freezes every time. Sometimes it freezes as soon as I click on a database in order to open it. More often the database opens but it freezes as soon as I open a form from the control panel and click on any button.

Would you advise removing and re-installing? My data file is in separate partition from the program. Presumably I could re-activate on the same computer without a problem.

                        Peter,

It seems like an uninstall and clean install would be your next step. You say that "data file is in separate partition from the program". I am taking this to mean that all application files are in a seperate directory for the Alpha program, not just the dbf.

From the help files on Activation, you should copy down your license number and machine name to be safe.

                        Help us help you
Some people have an activation problem when they re-install Alpha Five, reformat their hard drives, or replace computers.

If you have a problem, the first thing to do is make a note of your license number(s) and the "Machine Name(s)" of the computers that the software is installed on. (You can find this out by going through the process explained above).

Remember that the activation key is linked to the license number and the "Machine Name" of the computer, so if you ever have to re-install your OS, then you want to rename your computer the same that it was named before. For example, if your laptop is called "LAPTOP" and you need to reformat your hard drive, it is quite possible that the name of your computer will default to a system name, so rather try and rename it "LAPTOP" and you will not have any further problems regarding the activation of the software. If however you are not able to rename the computer the same name, then you will need to notify our customer service department of the change. We will then de-activate the old "name" and this will in turn allow you to re-activate with the new name.

                          Peter,

Can you compact your db? When you run task manager after a 'freeze up' is your CPU at 100% and stays there? Can you zip up your db and post it here for others to try and see if they experience the same thing?

You have to isolate the problem. You said [all other applications work fine] (I assume you mean all other Alpha projects open fine), and [locks up with current and previous patch]...

                            • Disable your virus software.
                            • Go back to the most recent patch (the problem was never with the patch)
                            • Start A5 directly rather than any shortcut that opens the application directly.
                            • Open the application but hold down the Crtl-Shift keys.
                            • Check the first two boxes to avoid any autoexec or startup form and click OK.
                            • It it starts fine, figure out what's in your autoexec or startup form that might cause the problem.
                            • If it still freezes, tell us exactly where it freezes with maxed CPU and find out what process is consuming all of the CPU.
                            • Also tell us if the application is on the same machine as A5 (or if the database is on a server, A5 on the client, or some other structure, etc.
                            • Explain what you mean by 'separate partion from the program'.

Also, if your other projects open fine, don't bother to uninstall/reinstall.

                              Dear Steve,

                              Thanks for the suggestions.

I followed your first 3 instructions but when I went to open a database (actually the Alphasports demo this time) Alpha Five froze and I had to use the task manager to close it. Tried again and this time Alphasports opened but froze immediately on the "invoice menu". Third time I got past the invoice menu but it froze on the "products menu". It is serious stuff!
