Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

Others have found that installation of the runtime creates a new shortcut on the desktop that replaces the shortcut to the developer's version. If you're starting Alpha Five from a desktop shortcut you might want to reconfirm that it's running the version you think you're running.

Going back to non beta at this time.

      Thanks

This is most definitely ****not**** a bug in A5.

The error message says exactly what's going on: You are using the runtime and not the full version.

I understand that you might THINK that you are using the Full version, but you are not. If you select Help/About you will see that you must be using the Runtime.

Thanks for the update. Glad its worked out for you.

Would like to take all of the credit, but actually it all belongs to Cian Chambliss (one of the principal Alpha Five developers).

          Thanks again.

            1. Don't make a quick post, when you are off to do something else.
            2. Appoligize to Selwyn, you guys do a great job with Alpha. I really like all the new features in V8.
            3. Tom you were right. I did not need runtime on my laptop, till today, to do some testing, and yes the short cut was changed for my full alpha, and runtime was loading up.
            4. Should have looked under help, like I usually do, it would have told me where I was. The new colors and icons in the control pannel threw me off.
            5. As far as I can tell, after testing this evening, the patch looks like it has taken care of the browse problems that I was having. They were close to what this post was about. I did not undo the beta patches or reinstall Alpha as I had posted. The mistake was being in runtime, when the desktop shortcut icon was changed during the runtime install(thanks for catching that Tom).

I should have waited a bit before posting.

            Regards

            Ed

This is something we here had learned to live with, but....

Thank-you Bob Whitaker for creating a bug report acurate enough for the guys at Alpha to realise this was a bug.

Thank-you Sian for correcting the bug.

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

Thanks to everybody on this thread for their patience and persistence. Even the one browse problem which ended up being a field rule issue was worth looking into. What I am referring to is the instance where the default rules where overriding the sets logic (and causing re parenting of the child records).

It points out the need for some way to determine the presence of conflicting rules - at the very least, we should report that there is a conflict when we load the set, taking the action of letting the set's definition *win*.
Better yet would be to provide a genie that cross-validates all field rules AND set definitions - and even provide warnings for conditions that, while not invalid, may have unintended side effects - like an automated 'code-review' facility that looks for problem patterns.

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

Swelwyn pointed out how to FIX our problem.

This was being caused by a "harmless" (at least in PREVIOUS versions) FILTER in the Child Table of some of the sets.

                  The filter was .not.deleted()

Once removed, the disappearing records did NOT happen.

And a 2nd problem viz "Quick Sort" function that did NOT work before is now OK & functioning as expected. This was tracked down by Stan.

                  Thanks Swelwyn, Stan & GROUP!!!!!!!!!

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

                    Dear Folks:

I have also experienced problems with embedded browse in a5v8.

We have a POS system written in a5v7, which we've moved up to a5v8.

There is a form (ps_mainscreen) which is based on 1 table: curr_journal. This table has no links to other tables. The properties aren't set for order. The only filtering is on a logical field (deleted or not).

Under a5v7 the browse updates properly after each item is sold, either through scanning or manual sales. Each item goes to the bottom of the list and marches toward the bottom of the browse window.

Under a5v8 the browse does not update properly - only the most recent item sold shows at the top of the browse in what appears to be line 1. If we use the vertical browse scroll bar we can see the earlier sales, or if we do a Page Up.

The only thing I haven't done yet is in the code just after the enter_end(.t.) command is to use a browse command to go to Record 1 and then refresh.

Needless to say POS is pretty useless with this problem. So what we are doing until it's resolved is to send all those clients with a5v8 runtime a new install for a5b8 with no data. We'll have them copy all their a5v8 data files back and reindex and abandon v8 for the time being.

If y'all want we'll ftp you a 100Mb install file with data so you can see for yourself.

                    Thanks -
                    Mel Thompson

ps: Don't get us wrong. We love all the potential in a5v8 and are presently working to take advantage of it. But this problem is killing us.

                    MT

Sounds like a bug report is needed.

Can you make an example with only the minimal data/objects needed to show the problem?

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

I can reproduce the problem with the files that posted. One question - is this *only* a problem with browses on tables at the parent level? I ask because I have found that there is logic that is preventing resynch unless a 'parent' table changed (fixing issues with browses on one-to-many children) - however if the browse is at the top of the set, it can be more aggressive when re-syncing with the table since there are no dependencies (what I am seeing is that since the table comes in with no records, the browse seems to remember this fact).

                            Thanks,

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

I found I could work around the problem by adding this line in the OnPush event right after the .enter_end() is done:

                              topparent:browse1.repaint()

This forces a *repaint* of the browse.

I also turned off one of our screen repaint optimizations by executing the following command (which you can add to your autoexec file):

                              a5.System_Mode_Set("mdi_update_locks","false")

I will investigate further, but please let me know if these changes fix the problem you are seeing.

                              Thanks,

Re: Embedded browse & disappearing records

I switched my v7 email app to v8 a few months back, had problems with the embedded browse, switched it back to v7 and recreated the browse. Even today, if I click on a name in the browse, click the email button and go back to that name in the browse then move to another name in the browse, the first one disappears. I have reset the querie to active(or) to see al of them.

Not going to worry about it at this point because I am the only one using this app, but thought it worth noting.
