Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Have you tried adding the field before you added the records? May be problem with over 300 fields

      Re: Addin a new field

I can add the field if the table is blank. Also, I created a new table and appended approx 50k records each time to it. I was able to add a new field each time. I'm still trying everything I can think of but I'm running out of hope and time. Any other ideas?

      Thanks,

Have you had any luck with identifying the records with the bad data?

Re-reading.... So after you've appended all of the records back to the new table, you can add the fields?

          Re: Addin a new field

post an example adb here, with some records, so we can see if we cann add the fields
also, post the script and the script location(or where it is run from)

and - IN PARTICULAR - if it is run from a form that has the table open when fired (which would be a 'no-no')

So when were you not able to add the field? With 50K, 100K, or 150K records?

I can't add the field to the full table, but could when I pieced it out. And I always open the table structure from the control panel to edit it. No forms are open.

                Thanks,

                  make a new adb
copy the full table to the new adb
write a looping script to create a new table(incrmenting the name each time) to add small groups of records to it

find which table you cannot add fields to and wallah you can look for the bad record(s)

So does the new table have the same number of records in it?

Probably, so now find where the data is different.

Make a set where the orig table links to the new table via recno().

                    Then query where alltext(orig_table) <> alltext(new_table).

This will find differences when the number of records are the same or different.

If the number of records are the same it'll find a few records.
If there is a difference in total records, you'll see where the first record is missing and all records after it.

                        Re: Addin a new field

Al, I am taking it that he was able to add a field up until he had all the records from the old table in the new table. Thus now the new table can not add a field.

DP, How about adding a field in the new table then append the records. At least it will give you more time to figure out what is going on.

Check the size of your table in KB. It is possible your reached the limit.

                              Hi Dave,

Gabe asked the right question that you answered. You are at the 2 Gigabyte maximum limit for a dbf database. When you try to add a field, it will just try to make an even larger file.

The solution is to segment each memo field of the table into separate tables with links back to the main table holding alll the other non-memo fields. If you are exceeding 2 Gigabytes with the main dbf file, then separate fields into more than 1 table with a link.

Alternatively, use an SQL database if you are able to.
                              Regards,

                                Re: Addin a new field

Thanks to all for the answer.

I do have a couple more questions regarding it though.

                                1. If no new fields are added, will the table work ok and be able to accept more records?

                                2. Does alpha have any plans to enable that file to grow past 2gb?

I could work on separating many of the fields into a new table (which we may end up doing) but many operations, forms, and reports would have to be adjusted for that.

We may also try to remove many of the non-used records.

                                Thanks again,
                                Dave
