Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Would v9 affect v8

In installed a5v9 beta about a week ago. I have started to have A LOT of problems with my v8.

I have received 2 critical errors tonight that have closed a5v8 down.
My toolbar on the script editor is missing half the time.
My forms are not working as they did.
Frequently...my design button does not open my forms up so I can edit them. I have to right click the form in the form list and select design from the pop up menu.

This is just a few of the problems I am having.

    Any thoughts.

    Re: Would v9 affect v8

    Tony,

There was a very recent discussion regarding v7 and v8 running together...I imagine the same holds true for v8 and v9.

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=72441

Should give you a good idea about it.

If so then I don't think your problem is directly related to the fact of just running them together or on the same machine--something else going on probably---not much help I guess looking at my post! :(

EDIT: do the problems go away when v8 is closed???

Did the problems arise immediately after installing v9??

      Mike,
Unless I missed something this did not help. I think I might need to clarify that I have not opened the current db i am working on in V9.

I have kept it in v8.

At one time I did make a copy of this db and play around with the copy in V9. But it got deleted when I got done tinkering with it.

Hmm, this doesn't seem to be the same thing as using two versions to access the same data. It appears there is some glitch in the v8 software. Did you install v9 to a separate directory? Maybe re-installing the v8 package will solve the problem?

I've heard of several people keeping multiple versions of A5 on the same computer and running them at the same time. It seems strange that v9 would have hosed the v8 install. But weird stuff happens. I'd try the re-install of v8 first.

I started noticing the problems today and its gotten progressively worse throught the day.

I have not been working on my db much over the past week so I am not sure when it started exactly.

I do no for certain that I had no problems a few days before I installed V9. I had spend a number of hours in V8 with no problems.

When I restart v8...still having problems.

I should have tried this earlier...but I just rebooted my pc. I will see if this makes a difference.

A5v8 just crashed again. I attached the error message it gave me.

              Hi Tony,

I have received the same error message a couple of times but have no clue as to why yet...quite a few problems I have sure seem to be due to my inadequate video card I have had to use when my "good" card went bad, but unsure if it is the cause really of this particular error.

I suppose it is possible that Alpha is confused between the two versions but only remember one thread that alluded to this being a cause of crashing. If possible, maybe uninstall one version and see if that cures it--then maybe a reinstall will resolve the issue seeing as how so many here use several versions at the same time and have so for years without problems.

                Mike,
Thanks for the feedback. I think i will uninstall V9 and see what happens. I have a suspicion that I will not be able to upgrade for a while anyway:)

                Thanks.

                  Re: Would v9 affect v8

Is it possible that you attempted to "Patch" V9 and the patch installer decided to patch the V8 install instead?

                    Re: Would v9 affect v8

I have A5v7, A5v8 and A5v9 Beta installed on my laptop, each in their own directory. Never had a problem. I think there was one time when I even had the same app open with v8 and v9, no problems.

You need to watch the installation path very closely because it is possible they could install in the same folder, especially the patches. If that happens, there WILL be problems.
