Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DDE to OpenOffice Scalc

    Dr. Peter Wayne has a very useful routine in the downloadable support file to his 'Xbasic for Everyone' book that sends an A5 DBF file to Excel via a DDE call. The code fragment is:

    sys_shell("c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe",2) 'your path to Excel will be different!
    sleep(3) 'give Excel time to start up
    chan=dde.open("Excel","Sheet1")

    followed by allowing the user to select a DBF file and POKEing the data across.

    Does anyone know an equivalent for OpenOffice Scalc. Substituting chan=dde.open("Scalc","Sheet1") fails with "DDE/OLE: bad parameter. I think OpenOffice may expecting 2 more parameters for the range of data and an optional flag but how can these be passed through the dde.open call which appears to only support 2 parameters?

    I'm using OpenOffice 3.0.1

    Thanks.

    Re: DDE to OpenOffice Scalc

    I like to use OLE, so perhaps this can help you whit Open Office

    Code:
    Dim oServiceManager as P
    Dim oDesktop        as P
    Dim oComponents     as P
    Dim oEnum           as P
    oServiceManager = ole.Create("com.sun.star.ServiceManager")
    oDesktop        = oServiceManager.createInstance("com.sun.star.frame.Desktop")
    oComponents     = oDesktop.getComponents()
    oEnum           = oComponents.createEnumeration

    WHILE oEnum.hasMoreElements
    	ThisComponent = oEnum.nextElement
    	IF ThisComponent.supportsService("com.sun.star.sheet.SpreadsheetDocument") THEN
    		oDoc = ThisComponent
    		oSheet = oDoc.getSheets.getByIndex(0)
    		text = "this"
    		oSheet.getCellRangeByName("A1").setString(text)
    		text = "is"
    		oSheet.getCellRangeByName("B1").setString(text)
    		text = "a"
    		oSheet.getCellRangeByName("C1").setString(text)
    		text = "Test"
    		oSheet.getCellRangeByName("D1").setString(text)
    	END IF
    END WHILE
    msgbox("END")

      Re: DDE to OpenOffice Scalc

      Thanks. That works great if OpenOffice is already running but is there a way to start it from within Alpha? A sys_shell call to scalc.exe creates a spreadsheet but it's not the one your routine writes to. I tried a call to soffice.exe instead but it just sits at the front page waiting for the user to select the option to use. If OpenOffice isn't running the transferred data appears to go down a black hole.

        Roland,
        SYS_OPEN()
        from the help file
        http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...SYS_OPEN().htm

          Re: DDE to OpenOffice Scalc

          Thanks but sys_open() opens a file through its association and in this case the user wants .xls. As both Excel and OpenOffice are on the same machine and xls is associated with Excel the wrong program opens as they specifically want to use OO for this particular database output - apparently they prefer some of the features in OO. What I'd like to do is automatically start OO then put the data into a new sheet in the same way as the original routine does with Excel. They won't find it user-friendly to have to remember to start OO first before running the A5 export. I can start OO up with SYS_SHELL() but it appears to be in a different session to the the OLE call.

            robert,

            I use that code and it opens an Open Office instance if it is closed. Well, I use A5 V9.

              Re: DDE to OpenOffice Scalc

              Thanks Angel. It works on my client's machine in A5v8 with the SYS_SHELL call and a slightly longer SLEEP() - 5 instead of 3. So the client's happy and that's the important thing but my PC doesn't want to know so presumably something is awry. I'll try it on another PC in v9.
