Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variable Drive Designation

I have this inline Xbasic command.

file_to_rename = ui_get_file("Select MAPCO SKU Master File", "MAPCO SKU Master file(MxAuditCount.CSV)","G:\MxAuditCount\outbox\*.*","X")
    IF file_to_rename = "" THEN
    END
    END IF
    file.copy(file_to_rename,"C:\MAPCO\input\mapco_Temp.Dat")

It works perfectly if my data is on the G: drive.

The trouble is that on some PC's it is on the F: drive or H: drive or some other drive.

How can I change this to work on ANY drive rather than a single drive ?

    Thanks.

I'm not a programmer but wouldn't you use something like If exists G:............................ else

I'll wager someone else with programming experience will chime in.

Does this mean it doesn't work at all if "the data" is on another drive or does this mean that one has to navigate to the actual location?

      my data
Is "my data" in the database directory where your tables are located? The shorthand for that is a5.get_path().

Need more details as to what you want.
      There can be only one.

        Re: Variable Drive Designation

I figured it out. I used the copyfile2 function and just repeated the line with all the different possible drives.

        Thanks.

          John,
Other than using the copy2() function, how did you iterate through all the possible drives? Am curious as to how others accomplish such things. It sounds almost as if you went from A through Z....if so maybe something like the following would be easier. This is how I would attempt it at least...You could put the copy2() function into the True argument where the messagebox is.
          Code:
          dim result as c
          dim drive_list as c
          dim num as n
          num=0
          drive_list= FILE.DRIVES_GET(crlf())
result=*for_each(x,if(file.exists(word(x,num+1,crlf())+"tet.txt"),msgbox("The file exists on the "+x+" drive" ),""),drive_list)
          if alltrim(result) <>"1"
msgbox("There is no such file located on any drive!")
          end if

            Re: Variable Drive Designation

I did go through all the potential drives. In my case it was just drives E through M.

I wasn't sure how to create something so elegant as your code and I had a customer climbing the walls waiting for it to be done so I did the only way I knew how.

Thanks for the insights for next time.

              John,

              You've peaked my curiosity.

Can you explain your issue in more detail just so I can understand it. The ui_get_file() should allow you to select any file that matches your file type definition on any drive. See this video.

One thing the video doesn't show is that the user may need to click the 'back' button when switching drives. Apparently changing drives takes you to the last folder accessed on that drive (?) rather than the root folder.

Was this just one of those "Oh crap! It really does work." issues? (BTDT!)

Or was the problem not finding the file but copying it to a different drive letter? (I think that could also be more automated but I'm not sure what you were trying to do.)

                Re: Variable Drive Designation

The case was this: I knew the folder, sub-folder and file name but the drive would change depending upon which computer was being used.

Many of the people using my app (my clients employees) are, to be kind, not computer literate.

By designating all possible drives, it took them out of the equation for finding the correct file and made the app simpler for them.

Thanks. That makes perfect sense now. (However, users who aren't computer literate? Never heard of such a thing.)
