Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table.add_fields () function

Having trouble with this function, always worked up until today

    here is the script

    fields = <<%str%
    User,C,9
    Date,D,8
    Elasped_Time,N,9,0
    %str%
    table.add_fields("summary", fields)

I tested each line interactive see below

    fields = <<%str%
    User,C,9
    ERROR: Bad expression character

    Date,D,8
    ERROR: Bad expression character

    Elasped_Time,N,9,0
    ERROR: Bad expression character

    %str%
    table.add_fields("summary", fields)
    ERROR: Variable "fields" not found.

Also I get a messege that the table is in use

    Re: table.add_fileds () function

In the interactive you would have to type the first line, hit enter, type the second line adjacent to the #, etc. (The # will appear as you hit enter at the end of the previous line, you do not type it in.)

    Code:
    fields = <<%str%
    #User,C,9
    #Date,D,8
    #Elasped_Time,N,9,0
    #%str%

    ? fields
    = User,C,9
    Date,D,8
    Elasped_Time,N,9,0
Tried rebooting? Sounds like you have something keeping the table open.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Steve,

I have tested your code and it works correctly.

In the Interactive Window, instead of one line at a time, highlight all the lines of the script and then press Run.

Try this, your code, just run the script.

Sounds like a database compact wont hurt.

            Keith,

I copied the script to my database and it worked once. I deleted the new fields and ran the script again then got the same error

I also copied the databse to my C drive and it works fine locally, the script runs every time.

I think I may be having network issue as my summary table is located on network drive.

            Thanks

              Re: table.add_fields () function

              Hi Keith,

I found the problem, im just not sure what to do about.

I'm running a crosstab on a table that creats 3 fields

              1. Charter field (name)
              2 In (Short time field)
3 Out ( Short time field)

it is this crosstab table that the add fields funtion will not work. If i remove those 2 shortime fileds fields and run the script it works, rrecreat the crosstabs (the 2 shortime fileds are created) the script will not work.

              Any thoughts??

              Thanks

              Steve

                Re: table.add_fields () function

                Steve,

You are right. I have investigated it and indeed the weird error messages appear.
The problem is that only when you have Timefields or Fields with Longtime in the table this message comes up.
You can report it as a bug.

With version 9 this runs perfect. No problems or error messages at all.

Not worth the effort. Patches for v8 are a thing of the past.

                      Hi Stan,

Ofcourse, but officially version 8 is a supported version.
But it's up to Alphasoftware to offer a generous (platinum?) solution.
Looking at my emails with all that offers .....

But you're right. Maybe even the patches for version 9 are past.
