Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error Message Once but not Twice?

I have a screen with a similar left hand Navigation ToolBar Launch to the AlphaSports but I keep getting an error message when i launch the left toolbar, however - when I clear the error and attempt to open the toolbar again, it opens and there is no error message. See enclosed image to help explain further and to show the error message i get.
    Any pointers welcome.

First time thru variable does not exist.

second time thru variable does exist, hence why you dont get the error.

Solution, dim the variable prior to the first time thru.

Re: Error Message Once but not Twice?

      Hi,
Thanks for the feedback – not quite sure how I would do as you suggested – any pointers?

When I launch the application the CheckBox is already set to X – I have tried to make the CheckBox blank on launch but unlike the accompanying checkbox for Full Screen I cannot find a way of launching the application without the X in place – I am guessing this is why I have to click it one to clear the error message and again to launch the nav bar?

The set up for the Side Navigation Bar is set up the same as Alphasports and is set on ‘Event’ OnChange – here is the code:

      'Date Created: 18-Jul-2002 08:47:31 PM
      'Last Updated: 07-Jul-2009 11:06:15 PM
      'Created By :
      'Updated By :
      dim shared vCshowNavBar as c

      if vCshowNavBar = "Yes" then
      dim global vcToolbarName as c
'if user wants to show the nav toolbar, then call the function that opens it.
'the function returns the name of the toolbar
      vcToolbarName = show_nav_toolbar()
else 'user wants to close the toolbar
'before closing the toolbar, make sure that the user did not already close it
      if ui_modeless_dlg_exist(vcToolbarName) then
'we have established that the toolbar is still open (a toolbar is just a modeless Xdialog Box)
      ui_modeless_dlg_close(vcToolbarName)
      end if

      end if

This is really frustrating – my knowledge thus far is keeping me from fixing the problem, thus is anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

      Regards
      Andy

Re: Error Message Once but not Twice?

Not sure this is how I would handle it, but you can move the dim statement for the vcToolbarName variable outside of the if structure.

For my applications where I use the toolbar in this type of fashion I dim the vcToolbarName variable in the autoexec script.

        Code:
        'Date Created: 18-Jul-2002 08:47:31 PM
        'Last Updated: 07-Jul-2009 11:06:15 PM

        dim shared vCshowNavBar as c
        [COLOR="Red"]dim global vcToolbarName as c[/COLOR]

        if vCshowNavBar = "Yes" then
'if user wants to show the nav toolbar, then call the function that opens it.
'the function returns the name of the toolbar
        	vcToolbarName = show_nav_toolbar()
else 'user wants to close the toolbar
'before closing the toolbar, make sure that the user did not already close it
        	if ui_modeless_dlg_exist(vcToolbarName) then
'we have established that the toolbar is still open (a toolbar is just a modeless Xdialog Box)
        		ui_modeless_dlg_close(vcToolbarName)
        	end if
        end if

          HI,
Your suggestion has suppressed the error message but I sticll have to uncheck first and then re-check the Check Box to launch the Nav Bar. I think with your suggestion and a way of ensuring the checkbox is 'unchecked' on application launch I think the nav bar will launch with one click and with no error message, all i need to do is learn how to ensure this checkbox is not checked at launchtime...
          thanks

Not knowing exactly how the check box variable is defined I will make some assumptions.

I am assuming the checkbox variable is a logical variable, either holds true or false. When you first create the variable set its value to false.

Ok - tried your suggestion, by setting the TRUE value to No and the FALSE value to Yes - the X did not appear in the check box but I still had to execute 2 clicks of the mouse to launch the nav bar.

I then changed the settings back and tried it again and guess what? The application opened without the X in the check box and the nav bar opens on the first click of the check box?

I examined the settings again and it appears if I set the 'Checkbox True and False values using a CAPITAL character like 'Yes and No' the X appears in the check box after launching the Application. When I remove the capital letters to lower-case 'yes and no' it operates without the X in check box after launching the Application?

Is this normal or is it a Bug?

Anyway - I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread, I have resolved my problem and learnt a bit more of Alpha 5 - thank you guys.
