Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Color equations and Combo boxes

    Hi All

Did this problem of color equations not working with a combo box ever get fixed?

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...tion+combo+box

Doesn't seem to work for me in either v8 or 9. But, as always, I end up thinking it's just me!!

    Kind regards
    Alan

    Alan,
I confirm that it is either still broken (a bug) or has been rebroken if it was fixed earlier.

I submitted it as a bug with the sample from the prior thread you referenced.

I found that the color would change if the form is closed and reopened.
    Mike

      Hi Mike

Thank you. It's always nice to know it's not just me being thick.

I noticed last night that the color changes on closing and opening the form. Thanks for submitting the bug.

I've just played with Alpha since first purchasing version 5 but now have the circumstances where I can spend time developing something commercially for my own vertical market with v8 and 9. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from reading posts on the message board. I see the flexibility (or perhaps complexities) of A5 and realise I have so much to learn. And whilst I'm willing to put forward the effort, I do get discouraged when I use the basics and things don't work as expected. I guess I'm saying I didn't know that the word 'workaround' would be so high in my list of A5 vocabulary.

I still know it's worth the effort. I'm just saying ...
      Kind Regards
      Alan

I maintain that this is probably the easiest way (but time consuming!) to learn about Alpha--its features/abilities, xbasic, etc..

I suggest downloading any/all sample dbs given here that have solutions as another learning tool (I now have hundreds in my personal help file along with same for code snippets copied from posts).

Also, learn how to search both the messageboard and the help file for information....like looking up an unknown word in the dictionary to learn how to spell it, learning how to do this analogously regarding finding the method or function is paramount IMO in being able to go forward in Alpha using xbasic.

Thank you Mike for your advice and encouragement which I accept wholeheartedly.

I have over time downloaded a few examples but not all and not methodically.

Time to up my game - I guess I'll start a library straight away!!
